The lady who said "who knows stuff like that" well, everyone else in the world, except Americans

I once read that 75% of the American soldiers who were sent to Vietnam had no idea where it was on a map.

Ok I'm Australian, but how do you not know Australia on the map. It's by faaaar the easiest country to identify, particularly when the country borders aren't drawn.

Being someone from the UK this is very shocking, as we spend some of at least the first nine years/grades doing geography and a whole class a week from year/grade 7/9 doing it too.

Here in Ireland when i was in primary school we did irish history, european history and world history. Geography the same. I could name all 50 states in the us. All main mountain ranges and rivers in the us and canada before i went to Secondary school. It was compulsary in primary school after that it was by choice. A minimum of 7 subjects

It seems to me that Americans really struggle to differenciate State, Country and Continent.

At the bare minimum, being able to tell these things apart would make a huge difference.

The suprising thing is they dont point to the USA and then Canada above and Mexico below. Should have at the very least that knowledge, its their neighbours

4:20 I am sick of hearing that. A lack of school education is not an excuse for anything. Everybody in a halfway civilised country has the opportunity to self-educate apart from school.

I was watching a YouTube video the other day, and a lady was asked where Wales was and her response was Wales is not a country, it’s a large fish. 😂

We both feel a disconnect from our fellow Americans, Tyler. You're not alone! I went ahead and taught myself a lot of world geography (for free on the internet), and I wish more of our fellow Americans would as well.

The shocking thing is not the ignorance, in a country where education is designed to keep people ignorant, but the lack of shams about knowing nothing. If I forget the capital of Latvia, I am ashamed. These people think believing Africa and Alabama are countries is fine.

I visited America on business. Out for dinner the first night with people from the office, when I talked about anything that was outside of America there was silence and they turned the conversation back to American things.

My experience of Americans in regards to geography:

"We don't know much of the rest of the world, because we never take it much in school." - but as adults... you don't watch news, meet people... hear stories of other places and get the curiosity to look it up? When I was 20, in Canada, I wasn't familiar with many countries locations, most of which in the middle east, or more eastern Asia... but when I heard about something happening somewhere, I looked it up... I wanted to know where it was happening, why it was happening, and how that affected the world. Do Americans not have that same curiosity about the world? I didn't learn it in school.... I learned it as an adult...

"The US is the greatest, most free, country on Earth" - This is a very common claim from US citizens. It's humorous to me that the same people who say this with fervor, are the usually like the people in this video, who can't even name a continent on the map, never mind knowing what countries are in each continent. There are US citizens who o have general knowledge like this about the outside world, but the percentage that don't would shock you....

I once saw a US citizen who was unsure if Canada was to the north, or the south, of their it's really depressing to think about

The answer is simple. American people are subjected to constant propaganda on how great their country is and how free they are. A country where every child has to swear allegiance to that country every morning in school, yes North Korea. A country where one has to walk around with an I.D. Card, yes China. A country where one cannot cross the road unless on an authorized crossing, yet again North Korea. A country where what comes out of the television is highly controlled by politicians, yet again China. A country where citizens are always told how bad the rest of the world is and how little freedom those countries have, again North Korea. Then you wonder why citizens don't know countries in the rest of the world. Reason because the government cannot afford for them to find out as they all may leave America for a better place.

The UK is in the centre of most world maps because of the Greenwich meridian.

In schools in the UK we learn about world history and geography including America and the countries relationship to our country. An English/Scottish/welsh child could point out at least a few countries.
