Improved sampling with a fully renewed "Simpler"

Simpler received almost a full rework, a new interface, a bigger break-out display, new warping, filtering and slicing options and it now offers 3 different modes.

Simpler Slice Mode

1. Classic Mode - playback sample, loop mode, automatically warped (pitched samples keep their length)
2. One Shot Mode - trigger or gate samples, fades can be adjusted
3. Slicing Mode - slice samples across your (midi) keyboard - This mode looks like a really interesting tool for drumloop and vocal slicing / chopping / cutting. The sensitivity parameter defines the number of slices chopped from the sample. "Mono", "Play" and "Thru" modes offer a variety of interesting playback modes. Mono: Play one slice at a time. Play: more than one slice can be played. Thru: Plays a sample to the end until you play another slice

use Option + Click to turn the grey transient markers into slices, but you pretty much need sensitivity 100, so you can right click -> Clear Markers or double click all the ones you don't want

Just wanted to point out a somewhat severe limitation of Ableton's new slicing feature in Live 9.5.

Of the 2 main virtues of slicing - (1) being able to rearrange slices in time very conveniently, and (2) playing back the whole sliced piece at different BPM - Ableton have cracked the first one pretty well but leave a lot to be desired in the second, compared to Propellerhead's Recycle and DrOctoRex. Ableton's use of time warping to fit slices into different BPMs is very different from Recycle's technique. When you start slowing down a sliced piece in Ableton, you soon get into trouble with the slurry, 'drunken' effect in every moment of every slice. In other words, if you go beyond a few percent difference from the original BPM of the piece, the character or timbre of the sounds start being disfigured by the time-warping. Recycle and DrOctoRex use a variety of techniques to keep the timbral character of the sound as close to the original as possible, even at ridiculously big departures from the original BPM.

That said, so long as you keep the Ableton-sliced piece at or very close to its original BPM, then you get all the wonderful advantages of being able to rearrange the slices in time, especially as the song progresses - think of all those lovely loops that can now liven up rather than dumb down a song!

Is there a way to use this new Simpler but set your own warp markers instead of using the predetermined ones they have? If so, how do I do that?

Ableton just put FL Studio's SliceX out of business even though SliceX is a standalone as well. What Ableton has done to Simpler in 9.5 is amazing and Bitwig better not copy ideas again. R>I>P FL Studio. Ableton is the best DAW now. You can slice, crop, freeze sync audio, convert audio and the list goes on with its award winning browser/mods. DJ's love it. I think Ableton will put a DSP and Surround in Ableton 10? Able10 Ableten.

OK, how the heck do you STOP a sample playing in Thru mode, other than playing another slice? If I'm chopping up a long song and using Thru mode to jump around different bits of it, the last pad I hit will just end up playing the entire song to completion unless I start/stop the transport. There's gotta be another way to stop a sample playing... ?
