How to get the BEST Sound from your Handpan // Essential Striking Techniques // Beginner Lesson

In this Handpan Lesson, we go over what I consider to be some of the most essential considerations in getting a powerful, controlled touch, and a great sound out of your instrument. We go over the primary striking techniques and a deep dive into refining our strikes. This lesson is great for beginners and though I consider myself somewhat advanced, I return to these principles and re-examine them every day.

Just got my handpan, and I've been frustrated not getting clean tones. Your video is so clear to understand. I've been watching video after video and yours was the first that gave me that "a-ha" moment of understanding. I have been playing taiko drums for 10 years and I employ a lot of what you say in my drumming technique: relaxing my body; having the control come from my wrist. When I was helping to teach students, most important to me was getting them to understand centering the core of their body as a way of "feeling" and connecting with the drum as they play, which is not easy for a lot of people to understand. This is the first video I have found of you, so I am excited to learn more. Thanks again for sharing, this has been so helpful!

Thanks man. My first hand pan arrived today and this video was massively useful. Your teaching style is clear and precise, which also added to the value of the lesson.

Thanks so much! A few decades ago I learned Egyptian drumming from a master teacher, and so much of what you have to say here is the same.. relaxed, centred, precise, fluid wrist, go slow, balance the hands, play as quietly as you can, always check and correct for tone, balance and ease... love it!

Your words are like poetry, and that instrument simply is the muse for which your energy flows.

Very good information about the learning process and explaining the feeling behind the strikes. You explained the things I was super curious about 😊

To breathe is such an underrated advice IMHO!
I'm 3 weeks in and I find myself too focused on making the next note that I suddenly realise I breathe really shallow...

Found your helpful channel. I love listening to handpan players and decided to purchase one. I play piano and this is a new experience. I was not getting clean tones so I used a small mallet and could at least identify the note. I'm hoping by practicing your techniques I will actually be able to play. I'll let you know how it goes.

Very cool. Didn't know about the dimple border vs tone field tonal quality difference. I like the part where you are feeling into one hand so that you can transfer technique to the other. It's something that I never thought to do until I started playing drum kit. It's so interesting how we just can't transfer muscle memory / conditioning from one hand to another and how we have to train each side separately!

Thank you so much for sharing your wisdom on how to play better. I tried to watch this when I first started, but I wasn’t ready. After a couple of years I came back to it and got so much out of your teachings. I really appreciate what you have to educate and inspire ❤

wonderful helpful material, great thanks to the author, looking forward to my practice since I am a beginner. one of these rare cases when i don't feel overwhelmed by the flood of info. sure to come back for more practice and lessons. Appreciate you making it sensibly bite size, but packed with material at the same time.
The most helpful salad recipe for me here - to have A FEW simple techniques and useful info. then you want to stay and practice instead of running away tearing your hair out :))
