Biden Pays Tribute to Late Son Beau in Personal Memorial Day Message

President Joe Biden has marked his first Memorial Day weekend as commander in chief by honoring the nation's sacrifices in a deeply personal manner.
He paid tribute Sunday to those lost while remembering his late son Beau, a veteran who died six years ago to the day. Biden attended the ceremony alongside his grandson Hunter.
"As many of you know, this is a hard day for us. Six years ago today, Hunter lost his dad and I lost my son," Biden said.
As a cold rain fell, Biden made his annual appearance at the commemoration in New Castle, Delaware, not far from his Wilmington home.
The memorial service is hosted by the Delaware Commission of Veterans Affairs at Veterans Memorial Park at the Delaware Memorial Bridge and is held every May 30.
"Beau didn't die in the line of duty, but he was serving at the Delaware National Guard unit in Iraq for a year, that was one of the proudest things he did in his life. So, thank you for allowing us to grieve together today," he said.
The death of Beau Biden from brain cancer at age 46 is ever-present for his father, and the loss has defined much of the president's worldview.
On Monday, Biden plans to do the same at Arlington National Cemetery on the official observance.
