New Nurse Anxiety | New Nurse Graduate Advice for Stress & Anxiety

New nurse graduates will experience "new nurse anxiety" during some point while on the job. It is most common to experience anxiety as a new nurse during the first 6 months to year of being a nurse. The anxiety seems to start at the beginning of orientation (because you are new) then decrease during orientation and peaks when orientation is over (when you're on your own as a nurse).

🟣Nursing Resume Templates and Job Guide🟣

In this video, I'm going to talk about what causes new nurse anxiety (feeling overwhelmed with the new environment/people, feeling not confident in performing skills, harming a patient unintentionally, dealing with chaos like balancing patient loads, completing paperwork, communicating with members of the healthcare team etc.) and how to deal with anxiety so you don't become burnt out and possibly leave the nursing profession.

Great video. I’m a new nurse and I’m definitely struggling with a lot of anxiety & stress. I’m constantly worried about making mistakes. It’s so frustrating. 😔

One month on my own. I’m really emotional and feel so behind with work. I leave work feeling not capable and unfulfilled. I’m tired emotionally and physically and I just don’t know how to manage. I’m really trying to give it time but it really takes a toll on me. I just feel out of place. I hope it gets better soon... thanks 🙏🏼

I have really bad anxiety. I feel like crying. I can’t stop thinking about work on my days off. Recently, I couldn’t get an IV on a difficult PT, and I had to pass it on to the next nurse and I felt SO bad. I still feel bad about it.

I can’t tell if it’s just my anxiety or if bedside nursing just isn’t for me.

I needed this today. I'm so thankful for you. You have no idea. One month in. So 11 months to go before the anxiety fades. Haha.

U described everything I feel. Esp the fact that I feel like i am a burden to the other nurses, slowing them down. All these make me feel so anxious. Had my first melt down the other day. I just burst into tears. I am an overseas nurse in the UK and I have been out of practice for more than 4yrs. Prior to moving to the UK, I was a newly qualified. So I practised just for a year. So I feel like I am reliving this twice. I am so stress, my orientation period finishes in two days and I feel like I'm still not ready. Thanks for all your tips, they are so what I needed to hear.

I am about to graduate, just got hired in the ER for night shift. I’m having so much anxiety and having trouble sleeping... this video was very comforting knowing that I’m not the only one, thank you!

I was a straight A student, and have been working as a nurse four 4 years. 2 weeks ago I started a new job at a very busy urgent care with higher acuity patients and have been experiencing anxiety for many of the reasons you described. I’m glad you made the video because it’s critical we not shame ourselves for feeling less then when we start a new job and/or admit that’s it’s OK and normal to be nervous even when you are an excellent and competent nurse. Thanks again!

I just started working in the OR as a new grad nurse. It has been information overload, so many new things that were never even taught in nursing school. Everyone is so experienced and fast, im the youngest in the unit and the only new nurse so i cant relate to anyone! Is frustrating because they show you a million things and then expect you to remember everything. I try my best everyday, but is very mentally exhausting. I cant wait until i feel confident in what i do.. i hate feeling out of place and stressed everyday.
I love the specialty and find it so interesting, thats the only thing that keeps me going.

it always gets better overtime mainly because experience is the best teacher. knowing the protocols and knowing how the staff are like individually, . also one tip is to be observant of your other co nurses. identify what are their strengths and copy it. and combine them all up plus add your own flavor to it.. most important thing of all is be brave. fake it til you make it. you will make mistakes but you will learn from it. its the courage to continue that

This is such a perfect video right now, i just started on a surgical unit after a really long job search and i've had 3 shifts so far and freaking out, just have to remind myself that it's only been 3 and it's okay to have tons of questions and be confused about a lot of things.
Thank you so much for your videos, they helped me through school and I'm glad I can still count on your channel for tips.

I've commented on a few of your videos before. I really wanted to be a nurse. Today I had somewhat of a breakdown. I experienced so much stress getting everything ready for school to start that I don't even know if I can handle nursing anymore. I haven't even started school yet! But I know God has a plan for me and I trust in Him♡ I have to wake up in about 4 hours and I can't sleep so here I am.. Thank you so much for this video.

Sarah, I am so grateful you exist. I watched your videos throughout nursing school and during my NCLEX prep. A few days ago I saw your video about nursing interview questions, and I got a job offer earlier today. Now I’m stressed about starting my career and you have a video for that too. You’re amazing, and I cannot tell you how much I appreciate all the work you and your husband put into these videos.

I’m a new nurse. Only have been working for over 2 months & I find that my anxiety only flares up before work & as soon as I leave work. I think about all the stupid things I said or did, what I could’ve done differently & how incompetent I feel. And I feel like it’s getting worse now that my orientation ends in 3 weeks & I still feel like idk wth I’m doing. At work I just do what I need to do, learn as much as I can, & really don’t think about my anxiety bc I have sooo many other things to get done & think about. But boy as soon as I clock out it hits me. Tears all the way home. It sucks sometimes.

Up until 4 days ago, I watched your videos on nclex review! Today, I am watching your videos how to transition from a nursing student to a brand new nurse! Thank you for everything you do!

I've been watching your videos all day! I've been a nurse for about 2.5 years, and I just started a job in CVPCU. Before that, I worked for a short time in a nursing facility and as a hospice nurse for over a year. SO...I'm now in the cardiac unit, and I am struggling quite a bit. I have only just learned those important skills like hanging fluids, IV meds, IV insertion and blood draws. We don't do that in hospice, and I never performed those skills in the SNF. I am definitely having the anxiety you've described in this video. How in the world can I pass meds, do blood draws for labs, contact doctors, document phone calls to doctors, do admissions, do discharges, tend to calls from patients, hang fluids quickly, continue to learn these skills that are quite scary because of the thought of making a mistake (bubbles in lines, bleeding when inserting IVs, missing an IV stick, causing pain or unintentionally harming a patient...), and all the other things - AT THE SAME TIME???? I have taken LOTS of notes today, and I've printed out your report templates. Thank you so much for your videos. I'll recommend them to my friends!!!

Dude I’m wickedly stressed out. Performance isn’t taking a hit. I’m getting better but man, I’m always stressed out and anxious before the shift. Now I’m questioning it, but we’re getting better.

Thank you so much for your videos. I used you all through nursing school, studying for my nclex & now as I start as an RN next week. You have the gift of teaching and are a blessing to nursing students, new grads & health care providers!!! You have no idea how much of an impact you have had on my journey to nursing.
