i work in a plant nursery and this one old dude comes in on mother's day with his kids to get his wife some flowers. Dude asks for flowers for his wife and I ask "Well, what kind of flowers does she like? I'm sure we'll have them somewhere." He looked me dead in the eyes and said "I dunno, just get me flowers she'd like."

I then asked "Well, how much sun does your garden get? Full sun? Shade? What colors does she like?" He just says again "Just get me flowers she likes."

This is the thinking from before ALL modern research on infant development which showed the importance of emotional connection and mental stimulation from birth. This might also explain boomers seeming a bit emotionally stunted IMO.

There are two examples of participation trophies I endorse:

One is for young kids to feel included, to encourage them to keep playing even if they lose.

The other is in high level competition, where even qualifying is considered an impressive feat, like the Olympics. Even if someone doesn't place on the podium, they still competed in the goddamn Olympics!
