After a 3.86 billion-mile journey, NASA’s OSIRIS-REx capsule returns to Earth with asteroid sample

In a massive success in global aeronautical science, NASA’s accomplished its OSIRIS-REx mission. The capsule of OSIRIS-REx spacecraft containing samples from the asteroid Bennu returned to Earth. The asteroid sample capsule touched down in a desert in Utah at 8.25 PM IST (8.55 AM MDT) later today. The capsule contained approximately 250 grams of sample material that was collected from the asteroid Bennu. It marked only the third asteroid sample, and by far the biggest, ever returned to Earth for analysis, after two similar missions by Japan. OSIRIS-REx collected its specimen three years ago from Bennu, a small, carbon-rich asteroid discovered in 1999. The space rock is classified as a "near-Earth object". There were no location sensors on the capsule, so the team relied on aircraft and ground instruments to track its descent. NASA team used infrared instruments to track the capsule’s heat signature when it was still high in the sky. After 3.86 billion-mile journey. OSIRIS-Rex mission has delivered US's first pristine asteroid sample.
