“I regret that I told her she could do 'nothing.' I wish now that I knew her name, or where I could telephone her, and tell her what I tell white people now when they present themselves as being sincere, and ask me, one way or another, the same thing that she asked.

“Well, I’ve lived to regret that incident. In many parts of the African continent I saw white students helping black people. Something like this kills a lot of argument.….I guess a man’s entitled to make a fool of himself if he’s ready to pay the cost. It cost me twelve years.”

Malcolm always says he later regretted this, and wish he had told her differently. He wrote it in his autobiography .

Roger Ebert: "Lee's films always have an underlying fairness, an objectivity that is sometimes overlooked. A revealing scene in 'Malcolm X' shows Malcolm on the campus of Columbia University, where a young white girl tells him that her heart is in the right place and that she supports his struggle. 'What can I do to help?' she asks. 'Nothing, ' Malcolm says coldly, and walks on. His single word could have been the punch line for the scene, but Lee sees more deeply, and ends the scene with the hurt on the young woman's face. There will be a time, later in Malcolm's life, when he will have a different answer to her question."

There are two ways to look at this case, one being she legitimately wanted to help. And two she was a FBI spy.

What makes it even funnier is he's nodding along with her as she's speaking so she probably thinks his response is going to be polite lmao! By far the funniest scene in this masterpiece 😂

"...listening to leaders like Nasser, Ben Bella, and Nkrumah awakened me to the dangers of racism. I realized racism isn't just a black and white problem. It's brought bloodbaths to about every nation on earth at one time or another.

Brother, remember the time that white college girl came into the restaurant—the one whowanted to help the [Black] Muslims and the whites get together—and I told her there wasn't a ghost of a chance and she went away crying? Well, I've lived to regret that incident. In many parts of the African continent I saw white students helping black people. Something like this kills a lot of argument. I did many things as a [Black] Muslim that I'm sorry for now. I was a zombie then—like all [Black] Muslims—I was hypnotized, pointed in a certain direction and told to march. Well, I guess a man's entitled to make a fool of himself if he's ready to pay the cost. It cost me 12 years.

That was a bad scene, brother. The sickness and madness of those days—I'm glad to be free of them."

I like how she tries to emphasize she is a good person and isn't prejudiced to win Malcolm's favor. It comes off as so disingenuous. No wonder Malcolm turned her down, even if in real life he regretted it. She had good intentions I'm sure, but she was just patting herself on the back the whole time. She didn't care about his cause, just how she can come off as a "good person" by supporting it. All Ego, no real compassion.

The movie was transforming but the book is transcending. Malcolm woke me up and I haven’t fallen asleep ever since.

He regretted this. He said, rightly so. There's no them and us. Although the climate of the media now days creates that. There's more good then had people. During a protest against us Muslims in Melbourne Australia. I saw passionate non Muslims opposing the other side along me. Till this day I cant forget that. Never let hate change you towards everyone.

Everyone who says that this scene is about showing how helpful whites can be and that Malcolm x was sorry for it are dead wrong. Whatever he may have done or felt 12 years later is irrelevant. This scene is about this moment, in the truth of this moment. The truth of this moment and the crux of the film is that blacks don't need whites. There are no whites that helped blacks in the entire movie and that is by design. This movie is empowering for blacks and whites hate it for that reason. Spike shuts down the white savior narrative. It's simply not about them. It's about the empowerment of blacks. Period.

They hate to be excluded but like to exclude us in just about everything.

So many people wanna speak on behalf of the oppressed, instead of letting them speak for themselves, ultimately they need the empowerment, not the other party trying to reach a hand down.

Why is everyone being Dickheads to her. This scene is based on a real life incident and malcolm x himself said that he regrets what her said to her today. He said he saw her walking away crying. I don't think you lot understand the point of this.
