Adam Crabtree, RP, is a trainer of psychotherapists and has a private therapy practice in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, He is author of From Mesmer to Freud: Magnetic Sleep and the Roots of Psychological Healing, Multiple Man: Explorations in Possession and Multiple Personality, Trance Zero: Breaking the Spell of Conformity, and Evolutionary Love and the Ravages of Greed. He is also coauthor of Irreducible Mind: Toward a Psychology for the 21st Century, and he is coeditor of Beyond Physicalism: Toward Reconciliation of Science and Spirituality.

Here he explains that the condition we think of as "multiple personalities" is now regarded as an extreme example of the "dissociative identity disorder" psychological diagnosis. He has worked with about 40 such individuals in his psychotherapy practice. This painful condition is generally the result of early childhood trauma. In some rare instances, when the different personalities are supportive of each other, individuals consider this condition to be advantageous.

New Thinking Allowed host, Jeffrey Mishlove, PhD, is author of The Roots of Consciousness, Psi Development Systems, and The PK Man. Between 1986 and 2002 he hosted and co-produced the original Thinking Allowed public television series. He is the recipient of the only doctoral diploma in "parapsychology" ever awarded by an accredited university (University of California, Berkeley, 1980).

Wow! Really shows the possibilities that our minds could produce!! Amazing! It would be great to have a class for children about the age of eight when they are socially being influenced to let go of their most creative images, ideas, and 'pretends' to encourage them to be more creative and imaginative...one hour each day. A great way to encourage self esteem and worthiness...and hopeful possibilities in each child

There are so many unanswered questions about identity. I often wonder if the person who wakes up is the same person who went to sleep; I'd argue that it's problematic to suggest individuals retain the same "instance" of their identity from day to day, given the interval of unconsciousness that punctuates our daily lives.

Drs. Crabtree and Mishlove, is there a way short of psychotherapy that one could discover unknown multiples within one's self?

What about people who channel? They certainly seem to be someone else, with different accents and body language. But it’s done professionally often, (see You Tube vids of Lee Carrol/Kryon, Bashar etc) and can produce great wisdom from the channeled personality. Doesn’t seem to be pathological....
