Adam Crabtree, RP, is a trainer of psychotherapists and has a private therapy practice in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, He is author of From Mesmer to Freud: Magnetic Sleep and the Roots of Psychological Healing, Multiple Man: Explorations in Possession and Multiple Personality, Trance Zero: Breaking the Spell of Conformity, Evolutionary Love and the Ravages of Greed, and The Land of Hypnogogia. He is also coauthor of Irreducible Mind: Toward a Psychology for the 21st Century, and he is coeditor of Beyond Physicalism: Toward Reconciliation of Science and Spirituality.

Here he explains that he is using the term hypnogogia to describe explorations of one's psychic depths including, but not limited to, states associated with sleep and dreaming. He shares a number of his own hypnogogic journeys – starting at the age of five. He discusses the sense of dread that sometimes accompanies these encounters with the unknown within. He also suggests that, while each individual is absolutely unique, there is a universal quality, independent of cultural conditioning, to hypnogogic terrain.

New Thinking Allowed host, Jeffrey Mishlove, PhD, is author of The Roots of Consciousness, Psi Development Systems, and The PK Man. Between 1986 and 2002 he hosted and co-produced the original Thinking Allowed public television series. He is the recipient of the only doctoral diploma in "parapsychology" ever awarded by an accredited university (University of California, Berkeley, 1980).

There are very few interviewers out there that have a depth and knowledge of the subject that Jeffrey has.
We're lucky to have him.

The story about the moth is one of the most profound things I've heard. I am so glad I can start my day with this interview.

Such a treat, hypnogogia is my personal favorite state of dreaming.
I am interested in your wife's work Mr Jeffery Mishlove, would you mind sharing more of her work with us?

I have to hand it to Adam Crabtree. He very thoroughly describes my experiences of being spooked by personal depth episodes that had me running like a scalded ape. Eventually, the challenge & curiosity drove me to seek again to know & understand. Robert A. Monroe, among many others, said that fear is the biggest obstacle to human progress.

In the early 70’s ‘Mandrake’ was published in Turkey as a serial, where I grew up, alongside the same creator’s ‘Phantom’. I share the enthusiasm about it. My father was very involved with metaphysical gatherings which I attended as well as a child; open mindedness is a lovely way to grow up. From Mandrake I learned the concept of concentration and perhaps switching mental channels. I would love to see it republished for today’s kids.

Thank you, i really enjoyed this interview and can relate to this approach. I think honesty and innocence are the doorway into this state, honesty with ones self and the innocence to not predefine an experience. which is why we experience it more when we're children, when we sleep and forget our ego and if we pursue any spiritual or mystical path that truly encourages these values.
Also a little trick i use to get there quite quickly, by humming a little tune inside my mind, just what ever comes naturally.

I can retain glimpses of the hypnagogic state, but if I’m honest with myself I add ego consciousness to connect dots in order to relate it to my waking state. I do believe that children have the psyche to retain some of those states. I remember pre dream states when I was six or seven and I’m 50.

I can relate to Mr Crabtree's experiences and it was comforting to know it wasn't just me that had them. Very informative, thank you both!

This is fascinating and particular to him, I hope he's cautious when working with people who are too easily
attracted to him as someone to follow. Each person has their own guidance and easily taken off their path.
Crabtree should understand his responsibility of knowing what he's privy to!

I have to thank my friend Dhyana !!! She talked about your video Jeffrey, and posted a link to your video on Lightworker's Council of Central Oregon Face-Book page, and I am very fortunate to have been able to have been able to watch it, and learn knowledge that I had not known before. Grateful! Kelly!

You are the best! I love the discussion around 24 minutes about Jung and Freud.

My main practice these days is Yoga Nidra, very much tied into the hypnagogic state ... (and) as an easy way to meditate, I can highly recommend the practice as an explorative method ...

On another note Jeffrey, I have just stumbled upon Merlin Sheldrake’s (Rupert’s son) new book, released this week, “Entangled Life,
How Fungi Make Our Worlds, Change Our Minds and Shape Our Futures” ... it may be of interest to yourself, to viewers and possibly worth a discussion ... Namaste 🙏 everybody and very best wishes to you all.

When I was 5 years old, I remember looking at my father's Forensic Pathology textbook with rapt interest instead of horror. I hadn't yet made the connection that these people had been hurt and were dead. I'm not even sure I knew what it meant to be dead. I was just fascinated that the human body could look that way. As I got older, I understood that these were "horrific" pictures. But they never scared me. Perhaps this is why I have such a fascination with death and the unknown...

I think Jeffrey has a point with spiritual notions communicating. This is absolutely perfect for what I was considering at the time as well. I had wondered about mediumship and conversation with death before the topic on Steiner was breached. The idea of objective spiritual thought seems to be concurrent with reading through synchronicity because you expect to get a read out of any archetype, thought, concept, ideal, natural phenomena, and for it to have meaning (like Adam knowing his name is Brian, Synchronicity would reveal it).

My comment at the beginning of the video will differ from the end, I have come across this term through my own curiosity about some perceived psychosis pre-sleep, a waking sleep. independent from other sleep related phenomenon. My experience with Hypnagogia is vast, personal and investigated through experience and research.

I've felt depersonalisation, de realization, out of body experiences all whilst following the experience of falling asleep, visual and auditory hallucination as well as turbulent mathematics which I hope to understand a little more about one day.

Wonderful interview. The only thing I would disagree is the notion that this suggestion of evolution where we merge and lose all individuality is not the case. What will happen is the further evolution of spirituality individuality which is PART of consciousness and inviolable. As Steiner suggested the ego is the youngest member of the human evolution and the path forward is the development of ego to unseen and spectacular dimension.

I wish he would elaborate on how he induces or cultivates these hypnogogic states. Does he have a technique or practice? Does he elaborate on this in his book?

ive noticed something sometimes when im in that state just before falling asleep, hypnogogic state i guess, i have certain feelings or moods sometimes, very rarely though, that i never have when asleep and never had in my waking life, as far as I can recall. i cant put them into words, it feels very peculiar. they are positive for the most part, sometimes they can feel a bit melancholic, but the key point is that they are unique to when I am in that state, and they differ a lot too. next time i have one i will see if i can somehow try to describe it. does it sound familiar to anyone else?
