I completely disagree with you about Mila Kunis' performance. The whole point is that Ani is meant to be cold in maturity, having not been believed by her mother about the gang rape and suffering the trauma of what she did to Arthur in the shooting ... The whole point is that she is CONCEALING her feelings. The younger Ani (Chiara Aurelia) got to be more emotional in her performance, as it required that. But Mila could only do this in her last scene with Finn Wittrock.

I tell you Nick is a movie Encyclopedia. He knows his shit that's for sure! Very impressive.

You kinda gloss over what really happened to this woman. The most important aspect is that men literaly destroyed her and she had noone there to help her understand she was a victim. Instead, thanks to our society, she is forced to be the one to carry the shame of what happened. But in spite of that she goes on in her life WITHOUT making more victims. As she clearly points out to Dean in the Library. (Best scene in my opinion) The biggest issue I see is you really focused on trivial things instead of the fact that Mila did an amazing job at covering almost every emotion a woman can have after something like this and she did it really well. It wasnt sugar coated and so I guess I can see why from a mans point of view you dont get it, but I disagree with your assessment. This was a really great movie with a great cast and Mila has my mad respect for how well she played this true to life.

Yes, the rape and the shooting were central to the story. But I don’t agree with people harping on about it and critisizing it that it was too much or too clichee. I really don’t think the movie was about the rape, metoo, the shooting or if she was involved in or not it. But about how it affected her and how she sees herself. I looked at the movie as a story of a woman finally finding her authentic self after so many years of denying herself due to trying to cope with trauma. She even says that in the movie, it’s about “everyone speaking freely”. Trauma affects everyone of us whether that be because of something as severe as a shooting or a rape, or “just” school bullying or a parent belitteling us; the feeling of “never being enough” haunts most of us in different ways. There are so many people who chase the idea of who they should be rather than who they truly are and want to be. Many people never get to the point where they stop to think about who they are and start healing their wounds. We live in a society who likes to numb its pain rather than try to accept its “dark spots”, never accepting its authenticity. It takes guts to be honest, to be yourself. So from that perspective I really liked the film and was honestly surprised of the mixed reviews.
As a note, I did not read the book, so I have no comparison. Furthermore I agree that exploring the intimate side of relationships of sa victims would have been interesting. But not really relevant to this movie. The movie was not about her trying to make it work with Luke, but about her realizing step by step that she couldn’t be truely herself around him. That she always had to be this character and that is why she broke it off. He even said “you used to be fun!” refering to a version of her that wasn’t really her. I liked the scene at the end where she sat in the tv station dressing room looking into the many mirrors/versions of herself, seemingly ready to face them all.

This review sounds like someone who’s never been r***d talking about the believability of a victim of SA. As a SA survivor this all felt very genuine to me.

I don't agree with you. Not everyone thinks of her voice as Meg's voice from Family Guy, yeah, sure, it is also Meg's voice, but that is your problem that you have this image in your head, and has nothing to do with the ability or talent of the actress to narrate her character's story. About the chemistry - it's there, but also it is visible that the character is pretending to be someone she's not, so there should not be actual true love chemistry between them. Too polished? So you think women who have been raped and are pretending to be fine, cannot be sophisticated, sexy, and classy? The inner struggle is the inner struggle, you cannot judge someone by their looks, and cannot tell instantly that they are suffering just because they always look like they are, a lot of times these things are well-hidden behind smiles, acting confident while dying inside. I think this film is a good depiction of a sexual assault victim and her struggles, and again tells us not to judge the book by its cover.

I actually watched this Friday night before your commentary dropped and I was shocked to say the least. The description of the movie just says something dark happens in her past when a documentary drops, and I thought it was gonna be a death, but Jesus not a death of a whole soul. OMG what she goes through and went thru that night was horrible and then to have them try to blame her for the shooting was just another stab to her heart, and all this time she lives doing what "she is supposed to do" at her own detriment. I can't say I loved the movie, but I did love Mila Kunis like this, and in this. Her serious roles have been getting me lately. And yes, I liked the commentary but yeah I don't think you guys really covered or got how much this trauma truly affected her. But I enjoyed your discussion.

I liked it overall, but it felt like it bit off more than it could chew given the sensitive subject matter. There were a few memorable lines and I agree it could have used a little tinkering to make it better overall and drive home how the trauma of her past affected her relationships with herself and others.

This movie is smart and intentional. Well acted and thoughtful regarding both storylines of school shootings and rape. I applaud the acting. The points were made and I got it.

Mika kunis did an amazing job . That comes from someone who has had experiences similar. This was very well done. I appreciated her performance but again I may have my beliefs due to feeling like this was very close to how someone could feel this way. But totally respect your take 🙏

Lmfao "sounds like Meg."

That would completely take me out of the movie. Hahaha

From the beginning I knew it was the 2 friends who would be the shooters.

"Was she involved? The answer's no"
Thank you, I genuinely appreciate this 😊 I saw the trailer and hoped there would be no edgy twist.

Having read the book, I did like some of the choices that were made in the movie.

Her mom was horrible. Would of been more realistic if her life turned put terrible with all that trauma

Nick nailed it! I watched this film and the snarky voiceover narration was so strange and really didn't match the gravity of her circumstance. I thought the story telling from the flashback era was much more compelling than the current day narrative.

Still waiting on that book club 🤷🏽‍♀️.

I was kind of disappointed that she wasn't involved in the shooting. The real truth made me feel bad for not much liking her. But it did make sense of why she was so blah and just using the bf. I wouldn't recommend anyone watch it.

I didn’t agree with her stabbing Arthur. Maybe because he was pressuring her? But I just felt like that was so unnecessary. She was more mad at him than the damn rapists

The flashbacks side of the movie are much better than the present. I enjoyed the movie overall and I give it 3 stars.
