After watching this video, I can strongly state that it was worth the wait. The animations, footage and narration was absolutely amazing. Thank you to the two lead animators and to Sam for creating this incredible documentary.

I was aware that the collision between the Queen Mary and the Curacoa was a tragic event. However, watching this video has truly put into perspective the magnitude of this tragedy.

RIP to all those who lost their lives during the sinking of Curacoa.

May They Never Be Forgotten.

Similar situation but better outcome: I was 2nd mate on watch on a Navy Oiler and the USS Midway (Carrier) was on our portside and closing. The carrier told us not to worry, they will pass astern of us. I had several instruments keeping track of the carrier but the most important was the portside bearing circle. I was keeping a bearing on the carrier's bow. The bow was closing rapidly and on a steady bearing. This is an "in extremis" situation in which in my judgement, collision was inevitable. With the carrier closing fast under 2 miles away, I called the captain. After assessing the situation himself, he gave the carrier a choice, either you turn to port, or we turn to starboard. Since we're the oiler and all the ships in the formation are taking station on us, the carrier turned away. I can still remember the looks on the faces of the sailors on the deck of the carrier.

The fact that the Queen Mary still exists is amazing, I wish they did the same with The Olympic as that would have been the closest most of us would get to the Titanic & Britannic.

Interesting that I was actually on the Queen Mary when you posted this, and I asked a guide about this very incident!

Reading Annie Proulx's "The Shipping News, " where on page 80 she writes about a painting of this calamity. This video explains it all, brilliantly! Clearly a TON of work to put this together, with so much detail and historic accuracy. Good work!

I first heard about this incident when I visited the RMS Queen Mary in Long Beach, CA during the 1980s, however, at the time I had misheard the story and for a while thought that the Queen Mary sank a Japanese transport of some sort. That idea, somewhere along the line, altered to a Dutch merchant ship. Weird how that happens. Anyway, two things I'd like to add about this story, which I still find fascinating and will always take time to hear about it again which obviously benefits me as I tend to find out newer, if not more accurate details such as was the case from watching this video, (thanks for that Historic Travels, )
1: Nowadays the RMS Queen Mary has a reputation for being haunted. One of the most commonly experienced paranormal phenomena happens within the prow section of the ship where people will sometimes hear the ghostly sounds of a collision happening along with men screaming. 2: Another, I'd speculate, more pressing reason that the incident was covered up was for morale purposes, i.e., the admiralty and other higher-ups felt that the details of the incident could cause a lot of strife between different factions in relation to who would support which sides of the arguments of who was at fault, (such as would happen after the war during the more thorough inquiry, ) plus the animosity that may have been felt by the families of the sailors who lost their lives due to the incident.
(edit: 'H'MS correction to 'R'MS)

Hey. I heard this story along while ago from a veteran aboard the decapitated war ship & I'm not one to cry (not because I'm a 37 Yr male & rubbish that men shouldn't cry, just that I'm not a crying person as such), but my goodness seeing your animation of the vessels involved albeit on a simulation still bought hone the intense traumatising & dramatic sequence of events that caused the sequence to the seconds to the disaster & recalling what the surviving veteran's story detailed although graphic, disturbing & incredibly deeply upsetting. To see your animation Sam that you've so obviously enjoyed popping as much of your free time into making of this video for us to understand the details that most wouldn't understand, your explanation of all facts is fantastic & to keep us entertained to understanding the historical events as well as tragic foundering of ships, human loss & impact, country's impact/involvement never ceases to amaze me of your passion like myself for your understanding & thirst to ensure all your research is to your highest standards so's you don't misinform us. Sam Thank You so much. I have a request Sam for a future video if I may please ask you, do I ask you Sam on here or do I contact you in another form of correspondence?? Letter? Email?
Sam please could you let me know or any of Sam's followers who may know how I contact Sam via email or another way I can communicate please??..

Thank you. I've researched, lived dreamed & breathed Titanic Olympic Class Ocean Liners as much as I have Cunard Ocean Liners for well over 28 years. Your knowledge is an asset to people who may know something I don't or you don't that I do but please continue in educating us all globally Sam. Thank You.

HMS Curacao is pronounced 'Curra-sow'! Those 32 Knots the Queen Mary traveled at during wartime helped to wear them out before their time (also Queen Elizabeth). One of the reasons these ships were taken out of service in the mid-1960s in addition to the Jetliner.🙂

"On a lighter note, readers may be interested in the tale, perhaps apocryphal, regarding the post war court case about the loss of the CURACOA. One of the barristers involved was examining a witness who had been a lookout in the cruiser, and was asked what had been his reaction on first sighting the QUEEN MARY bearing down on him at full speed.

The alleged response, namely 'You could have buggered me through my oilskins', was not heard clearly by the learned judge, who asked the barrister what the witness had said, to which the reply came 'The witness was taken aback, My Lord.' "

This tragedy is a perfect example of what happens when people follow textbooks all the time over common sense.
