After Rajasthan's Platform-Based Gig Workers (Registration And Welfare) Act, 2023 -- which extends social security to gig workers in the state - the Karnataka government is too considering the implementation of a surcharge on online transactions conducted through platforms like Amazon, Ola, Zomato, Swiggy, etc. India's gig economy is surging at a rapid pace -- the Gig Workforce Is Expected To Expand To 23.5 Mn Workers By 2029-30 -- with the NITI Ayog expecting Gig Workers to Form 6.7% Of Non-Agricultural Workforce By 2029-30. However, due to no definite pay structure for these so-called partners, the gig workers hardly get a return from this growing sector.
On India Development Debate, Tamanna Inamdar speaks with Madhavan Narayanan, Senior Journalist & Author; K Ganesh, Serial Entrepreneur, Promoter - BigBasket, Portea Medical, Bluestone, Homelane; T P Ostwal, International Tax Expert; to understand why consumers have to bear the responsibility.

Savings & financial planning is the individuals’ responsibility... there need not be a separate bucket called gig worker’s welfare... insurance, mutual funds, PPF, NPS are open to everyone... if the person is not sufficiently paid, let there be a higher pay but don’t complicate conducting business...
