The NES wasn't the most successful of machines in Europe. Though while it didn't bomb, publishers were often forced to port their games to more popular European computers and consoles to make money.

So In this episode of GYCW, Guru Larry takes a look at the bizarre British ports of everyone's favourite shooter, Contra.

Um, Larry. For some reason the Audio has become desynced in this video. Bringing it to attention just in case it isn't just me.

Every day, for the past eight years, I come back to YouTube hoping today is the day Larry finally releases "Belmonts and Bombermen".

Well, not really. But every now and then, I see this video in my recommendations, and say "blimey, it's been awhile!"

You really should ! I french and in our country we didn't had the troubles UK seem to have had with this system.
I'm very curious to know exactly what was the problem with theses two versions of the NES in the same market and what Nintendo made to, I suppose, wipe the Mattel version out of the market.
In France, the NES was pretty much the same great cultural thing than in the US. Everyone had one. Sega was a lot more successful in France than in the US though with the MasterSystem.

How sad."

If you thought having two separate NES toasters in the UK was odd, the HK market had both the NES Toaster and the Famicom sold legimately as well.

I never realised how little success the NES had over here in the UK, no wonder you see more sega stuff everywhere in second hand shops in northern ireland

Did you really play through all those contra games to make this video? That is badass, I can't even finish the first one.

Strangely, the NES was extremely popular here in Sweden. Shows you how important the distributor is!

I still don't understand. The NES was a total bomb in PAL territories, yet why did they make such a large number of PAL exclusive titles for it, like Noah's Ark or Beauty and the Beast? Why did PAL territories get Japanese games like Over Horizon and Gimmick, but not the USA, where the NES was arguably far better off?

I dunno if this was common all over the country, but where I live, the NES was so rare I genuinely never even knew about it until I got internet. Not kidding. We had an SNES but had no idea there was one before that. My parents still just call the SNES "The Nintendo"

The NES pricing was stupid. My parents had an NES and a Gameboy each (both of the Gameboys they passed on to me :D ), but it took months of saving, doing chores and birthday money just to get one game for the NES. At one point, my dad got a computer. Both of them were amazed at the fact that games were so cheap. One week's pocket money got you a game! I think they sold their NES after that... :(

Larry, you're a smart guy, why don't you have more subscribers? This channel is criminally underated!

I thought that was the Uxbridge Boots - I walk past it every day... that branch with the post box is actually still there (with a bigger one in the old "Chimes" shopping centre about 200 yards away...

Actually im somewhat confused, so the mattel version of the system worked with both mattel and nes games whilst the nes version only worked with nes games?

Sorry to state the obvious but the audio played up a little during the video.

It was fascinating to watch regardless :)
