Visiting the Joint Security Area (Panmunjom) where you'll find the famous blue huts is often synonymous with visiting the DMZ. Actually, the line separating North and South Korea is 250km long, and there are lots of places (often more interesting) that you can visit along the way.

And definitely more off the beaten path!

I break them all down for you below!

✈️ I joined this trip as part of the 'North Korea from a Distance' tour by Koryo Tours*.

This trip takes you north of the 38th Parallel as you explore some of Korea's hidden gems and iconic spots along the North-South Korean border. This tour is ideal for those curious about North Korea and the issues on the Korean Peninsula, as well as adventure-loving travellers! It is also perfect for those wanting to visit North Korea now but aren't able to.

You'll visit islands closer to North Korea than South, explore various border points for a closer look into North Korea, and dine with experts you often hear about or see in the media.

See the trip & the itinerary for 2024 here;

🎟 Quote 'ZoeDmz' when booking for a $150 discount for the first 2 bookings, and a $100 discount for further bookings!
*not a sponsored trip, but I do work for Koryo which is why I get to give you all a discount code 🙌 .

🗺 Visiting; You can also visit all of these places yourself, but you will need a car, to do quite a bit of research and plan beforehand due to the multiple checkpoints and security-related issues, and pretty decent Korean as there can a lot of paperwork for some of the places and rarely is it available in English!

One day, I will visit the "DMZ" from the North Korean side, because it's been my dream for over a decade! I do hope they re-open to tourism eventually.

As a question or suggestion: how accessible are any of these for those with limited mobility ? Many of the scenes look like a person in a wheelchair would be able to see little or nothing of the DORK because of the height of the wall barriers.

I patrolled the DMZ between South and North Korea back in '86. I'll bet nobody has heard of the terms "dolphin head" and "inflation alley."
