In a swarm they're unbelievably gentle because they're homeless. They have nothing to guard and they only have a few days worth of food in their tummies. You can't believe how incredibly tickly it is to have all those little critters in your hands. It vibrates your whole body.

Hornets and bees sting when someone invades their nest. To avoid that you have to use smoke: the insects perceive smoke as a fire alarm, they eat all they can and get ready to follow the queen to a new home. In that situation bees don't care much about attacking intruders, they have a new priority.

I save bees at work. They drown in my energy drinks every time I leave a can outside. I once found 2 floating together, one in bad shape and the other hugging onto it like Rose and Jack Dawson on the door in the middle of the Atlantic. I poured them onto the ground and watched one bee attempt cpr on the other, then they walked in circles in the puddle shaking their heads and cleaning themselves.
