On this episode of Nihon NY we sit down with the kawaii and flamboyant Japanese singer, actress, TV personality and fashion front-runner Tomoe Shinohara. Speaking before her first concert in NY, alongside the 'forever young', J-techno pop band Hikashu, she let's us in on her favorite spots in the city, why she is such a big Hikashu fan and her unusual way of breaking into the music industry.

I've been looking for Tomoe Shinohara for a long time. I had found out about her along with other Japanese artist on HEY! HEY! HEY! Music Champ back 98' while living in Brooklyn NY...I was 14 then. I became obsessed with Japanese culture of the late 90's, music, movies, pen pals. etc. Taught myself basic Japanese and I DLed as much music on dial up( haha I miss the sound) then lost it all when I was 25 to a house fire. For the life of me, I could see her face in my mind, but I couldn't remember her name. Its so nice to reunite. I can't thank you enough JapanSociety for putting these video's with such amazing talent. Oh and thanks for all those Matsuri's. Next time I'm back home I'll be sure to pay a visit. Sukiyo! <3

Just watching this now because I was feeling nostalgic for the music of my early teenage years. So many memories! She has grown up so much, it's very interesting to see. And it looks like she had work done on her teeth. That's a little bit of a shame, they were such a charming part of her look!
