Tape than dope if you go the other way the tape slips.

Dope is a lubricant so under the tape makes no sense.

Tape then dope is the only way. Less mess, better coverage. Just makes more sense and is more secure.

It has to be tape first then the dope, otherwise the tape is going to slip any chance it gets. Also there's reuse. If you need to unscrew, with the Teflon on first, then you should only need to add more dope, as the Teflon should still be firmly on the thread after unscrewing.

Dope then tape. On everything. That’s the Local496 Pipe Trades Union method.

I'm not a technician
But it's logical to use tge tape first and than dope - Because if you put the tape above the dope it doesn't let it get inside the grooves.

Funny, I was just struggling to stop a leak in a 1/2" treaded copper fitting. Final solution was to do both: Dope the male threads, wrap tape (leaving at least 3 or 4 of the first threads unwrapped), then more dope across all threads. In both dope applications I applied it liberally then used my finger to work it into the grooves. Lastly, hand-tighten and give no more than 2 more turns with a wrench. I've never had to go to that extreme before, but it worked.

for gas applications with steel pipes dope helps prevent rust on threads. dope then tape.

I used tape first then dope — tape handled the thread while the dope sealed what the tape could not while acting as temp lubricant until it dried and further added to the sealing

The railroad commission in Texas which is essentially the states gas inspectors say you can only use yellow tape or Rectorseal pipe thread sealant. It’s only one or the other of those two. I’m new to plumbing and can’t find the right answer. This man I met working sued a plumbing company in Texas for using both and the wrong tape. So I’m confused because it works well idk

I most often use dope alone because it is (unlike tape) not damaged by adjusting fitting clock positions and is far less affected by vibration on air compressors, pumps etc.

It doesn't matter it's personal preference, this is the hill I'll die on.

39 year plumber here. I always use the sandwich method. Tape then dope, then apply 3-4 more wraps of tape on top of the dope.

This method works for gas and water. No leaks ever.

I usually smush the teflon onto the threads, turn the nipple clockwise once I overlap the teflon, and tension the teflon around the thread by turning the nipple clockwise to not wrap around the threads with the tape
I can make thah blue monster look white

Either way is sufficient but You really only need 1 or the other they'll both work alone and per code here in sacramento ca. But whenever i do gas i always tape then dope but whatever floats your boat ..

Depends. Typically, tape first then dope. Tape only on gauges and things with a small orfice so the dope doesn’t clog it. Dope only but off a different type on plastic threads. Different tape and different dope on stainless. Anti seize on unions and bolts. Locktite on straight threads for chrome lavatory tailpieces.

Use tape OR dope, depending on the system. Tape for DCW, DHW, CA, N2, etc. Dope for W&V, VAC, STM, CHW, etc. Using both is redundant; and, a waste of time & money.
They're both used as lubricant to prevent the threads from binding, so that the tapered threads make a sound joint. They are not sealants.
