The Crusaders were one of the pioneers of Jazz-Funk music in the seventies and have made a number of visits to Montreux over the years. This DVD focuses on their performance from 2003 when the band were touring in support of their album "Rural Renewal". Founder members Joe Sample and Wilton Felder were joined in the line-up by long standing friend Ray Parker Jr on guitar and by the inimitable Randy Crawford on vocals. They delivered a set that spanned their career from early days up to their latest album capped with a stunning nine minute plus performance of their classic "Street Life" and finished off with a fun rendition of Ray Parker Jr's "Ghostbusters".

Formidabili Randy Crawford, The Crusaders of Jazz con Joe Sample. Li ascolto dal 1981. Avevo 16 anni. Tecnica musicale grandiosa, Joe Sample è un gigante del jazz, un concerto entusiasmante, una perfetta e definita percezione spirituale soul di controllo inarrivabile. Strepitosi!

I am a huge fab of the studio recording, particularly Bill Withers' vocal. I was prepared to find Crawford's performance to be a disappointment. BUT...she nailed it. Not by trying to mimic the original, but by doing her. This composition had everything: amazing groove, haunting, somewhat complex harmonies, and, my favorite, lyrics about music and musicians. This performance is a truly extraordinary rendition of a song I thought could never be recorded or performed better. Wow.

Musica perfetta, abbinamento voce e testo davvero magico, perfetto. Una canzone come questa esce ogni 100 anni La esecuzione e bellezza di questo brano è dogma, un principio che si accoglie senza discussione! Capolavoro.

This is the first Crusaders track I ever heard, on an LA radio station in 1983. I'd recently come over from England to work on cruiseships and was driving around San Pedro & Long Beach on a port day. Great version with the incomparable randy Crawford!
