The cracks were located at the eves, this house was over a hundred years old, and the stucco I applied to the left side also had lime, which kind of flexes.

It took about 90 years for this settling to occur, so worst-case scenario, the stucco I applied in it will last perhaps 50 years or forever, considering the house is old and has it’s settled as much as it’s going to.
Now let’s take the right side. I filled it with caulking that had sand in every tube.
Caulkings are designed to flex as the house moves or settles.
Since I don’t believe the house will settle any longer, I applied the caulking to prove a point.
So what happens when you apply caulking in gaps larger and more profound than, say, 3/8 thick and or deep.
It gets sucked in or shrinks. This takes about a day to a week.
So stucco in this situation is the best fix.

By the way, I went over the caulking with stucco before I left this repair job.
I applied caulking to explain caulking do’s and don’t’s.

Thank you all for watching, and wishing all a great day!

I have a stucco crack about 2 inches in width on the side of my house. Should I fill in the cracks with some kind of gap filler (like Great Stuff) before I put in the stucco?

That's the exact application I have where stucco meets wood eaves.  I do have a question though.  Q:  What type of exterior caulk is best for new unpainted wood under the eaves.  (I just had a new roof put on & they replaced all the wood for the eaves with new).  I want to seal all gaps & paint w/latex paint.  So it has to LAST and be paintable.  Silicone w/acrylic?

If you use a non-shrink caulking like neural cure silicone or any hybrid products, you don’t need to worry about shrinkage. It’s all about the formulation on the caulk. Supra Expert is solvent base, known to shrink up to 50%! Take it from a adhesive/sealant expert:)

If you go thicker than specified it WILL fail. Sealant should be used to stop water infiltration in a moving substrate. This is under an eve so there is very little chance of water infiltration so stucco is a very good fix. But if there is a chance of water infiltration the sealant needs to be installed according to the manufacturer specs and installing it too thick is an amateur mistake
