My favorite lyric is specifically, “I promise, honey, I can feel your pain.”
There’s something about the way Gryph0n sings it. The specificity of calling us honey. The fact it’s a promise. It’s the perfect incapsulation of the type of villain that I love. The type that’s suave and confident, the type that’s very assuring in their intentions, the type that’s affectionate with the hero. That type of villain has always been the best kind to push all of my buttons. It’s almost like, if you ignored the actual lyrics around it, Alastor could actually be reassuring you. “I promise, honey, I can feel your pain.” I promise that I can empathize with you. I promise that I care about you. I promise that I know you’re hurting. I promise I care, honey. It’s that mental warfare that births my favorite villains. The emotional weight to the lyric, the almost soothing way it’s sung on its own, especially in the very last verse.
Then though, you’re reminded of Alastor’s true feelings, his true intentions, his true motives. “I promise, honey, I can feel your pain, and maybe I enjoy it just a little bit.” He promises that he feels your pain, and he likes it. But even then, there’s that sense of, “He still cares, ” because he’s quick to assure us that maybe he likes it just a little bit. He asks you if it makes him insane. He asks for your input. He makes you feel important directly after calling you honey, directly after saying he knows you’re hurting, directly after saying that he enjoys that you’re hurting.
This is probably way too long of a comment to be about three lyrics in the chorus, but I can’t help myself. That twisted sort of affection is breeding grounds for the most emotionally damaging and effective type of evil. It’s darkly beautiful and I can never get enough of it.
