US President Visits Welfare Square

“We’re really proud of you. What you do is like nobody else.” Those were the words of U.S. President Donald J. Trump in his first visit to Salt Lake City since becoming president a year ago. President Trump met with leaders of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints at Welfare Square Monday, December 4, 2017.

He was greeted by President Henry B. Eyring of the Church’s First Presidency; President Russell M. Nelson of the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles; Bishop Gérald Caussé of the Presiding Bishopric; and Sister Jean B. Bingham, Relief Society general president.

Many Presidents have visited the Welfare Square and world leaders. Our church provides for all in need. No discrimination of any type.

I'm not President Trump's biggest fan, but I respect the office and am grateful that he took the time to visit and had so many positive things to say. It is always difficult to determine how genuine a politician's words are, but to me he seemed sincere in these clips.

It is also nice to see our leaders always showing the same graciousness and respect to all visiting dignitaries, without regard to politics. A great example in our increasingly divided and contentious political climate.

I love this video, as I find this video very uplifting and joyful, as I volunteer at the Mukilteo, WA Bishop’s storehouse. Pres. Trump is a good man and President. I am so happy he scheduled time to visit Welfare Square and He endorses the goodness of giving to people in need.

Sometimes these visits seem awkward or scripted but for the church welfare system to be recognized by government leaders is significant. This creates lasting connections that can allow the work to move forward in ways that can only be done on a political platform. There are countries that not only are we restricted on missionary work but even aid from the church is not allowed. The church works continually with governments to coordinate aid and help to soften relations that would normally be impossible. Example: United Arab Emirates and Shanghai are going to have a temple! That is significant on many levels. A simple visit like this helped with the UAE temple and the church has worked with China for years through the welfare program.

Unfortunately, Mitt Romney made such a bad impression on President Trump, that Im sure He was mistaken on many levels about our wonderful church. Im glad he had the chance to witness the many charitable programs we employ to help around the world.
