Dr. Allen shares 4 true scary stories from the eye clinic that will freak you out! Warning ~ If eyeballs scare you, this video is perfect for you! Recently, my friend asked me about the scariest cases I have seen in my practice and being such a big Halloween fan, I thought I would share them with you. I hope you enjoy it!

Note: All names and likenesses have been changed to protect patient privacy. Otherwise, these are all true stories.

📒 Show Notes 📒

All these stories are being shared for educational and entertainment purposes. Please regard all humans and their stories with dignity and respect. I find medical stories like the ones shared here as a reminder of how amazing and resilient the human body is. I hope you find it as mesmerizing and as beautiful as I do.

Story 1: Corneal abrasion: These are commonly seen in the eye clinic but some are worse than others. This particular one was fairly extreme and what makes it a scary story is that the patient was blind in the other eye. Making it more difficult to treat and potentially threatening the patient’s vision.

Story 2: Enophthalmitis - Most eye surgeries go without complications but when things go wrong, these become true horror stories. This patient unfortunately developed a case of endophthalmitis, which is an infection of the inner eye and needed advanced treatments for the infection.

Story 3: Sympathetic Ophthalmia: Although rare, sympathetic ophthalmia can be a true scary story for doctors. This story may be the most graphic, but the threat to the healthy eye is why this story can be so terrifying.

Story 4: More graphic and disgusting if anything. This is probably one of my most creepy stories in that the patient’s skin and bone were changing and flaking off.

Fascinating video but I'm glad I have a strong stomach. Years ago while working in a large hospital we had a patient come through the ER complaining of a horrible headache. He was a carpenter and while working with a pneumatic framing nailer it kicked back and bonked him in the nose. After he got his nose to stop bleeding he went back to work. Three days later he was in the ER. They did an X-ray to see if he had any broken bones in his face and found a nail in his brain. It had gone through one nostril and lodged in his brain without killing him (heaven knows how!). He was sent to surgery for a nail-ectomy and went home three days later with no apparent issues.

Thank you for sharing these stories. I was born blind in my right eye, it has something similar to a cataract. The doctors said it is an inflammation of the iris. I was told to wear protective eyeglasses so as to protect my left eye. I don't know for what reason, I did not get the protective glasses. This episode made me aware that I should get my protective glasses soon to protect my eyes. Thank you for the motivation and information you shared here. It's a game changer for me and my eyesight!

Hi Dr. Joe. So I discovered your channel some time ago because recently I bought my first pair of glasses that was initially only intended to reduce my digital eye strain, and it turned out I have astigmatism. Since then I binge watched almost all of your videos. So informative, so helpful. Keep it up! Please stay safe and happy Halloween!

Used contacts for the first time around 3 weeks ago, loving them.

I definitely forgot how to tell if they were inside out the next day.

Thanks about that...

Just wanted to comment to thank you for making your videos!

I've developed pretty moderate dry eyes as a result of contact lenses (wrong water %, wore them too long etc etc) and started using systane complete eyedrops (usually right after taking my contacts off) + humidifier (at night) from your recommendation and have seen a HUGE improvement in my eye condition. The doctors I went to didn't explain anything to me regarding my eye condition; only strongly advised me (emphasis on strongly) to stop wearing contact lenses altogether and prescribed me eye drops (alcon tear-free single use resealable ones). This caused my condition to worsen until I found your videos

So thank you so much for creating this channel and helping people like me out!

Third year optometry student here! Unfortunately haven’t been in clinic long enough to have any spooky stories of my own, but if I ever see one like the last one you described I would NOT know what to do with myself! 😳

This is great. We always try to educate our patients in our practices the importance of annual eye exams and it's not just to renew a prescription. Thanks for creating this. More will be awesome.
