Introduction to the Trivium

The Trivium is the arts of grammar, logic, and rhetoric. The Trivium means literally "three ways." Grammar concerns the art of language. Logic is the art of thinking. Rhetoric is the art of persuasion. Rhetoric combines logic and grammar.

Related to the Trivium is the Quadrivium which is the arts of arithmetic, geometry, music, and astronomy.

The Trivium is the most sophisticated systematic method of intellectual self-defense discovered by humankind. This is true for both applied (computational-oriented) and pure (theorem-proof oriented) courses. I always had to work through the derivations, examples and do all of the homework to "get it".
