The liberal arts are the arts that liberate. They liberate us to actualize our potential as human beings and to live a flourishing life. This lecture introduces the seven classical liberal arts, considers what we mean by "liberation," and looks ahead at the series to come, where we explore the first three of the classical liberal arts: grammar, rhetoric, and logic.

This channel is a gem! I couldn’t find anything similar in my mother tongue but the method is the same. Thanks a lot!

Arithmetic: Number
Music: Number in Time
Geometry: Number in Space
Astronomy: Number in Time and Space (i.e. the Music of the Spheres)

The Apron of the Master Mason with the three folded down over the four of the oblong square. Faith, Hope and Charity over the four Cardinal Virtues as well as reflecting the importance of the seven Liberal Arts in the Fellowcraft Degree.

WOW, I am ABSOLUTELY blown away by the quality and effort of your channel.

I am busy with a series explaining how to "Think Medieval" and I will most certainly send my subscribers your way.

If you will permit me to share...

I have always loved the medieval world, its history and aesthetic. I recently began studying the Summa and when I came across the "Great Chain of Being" idea - it radically shifted my perspective of the world around me.

Ever since I have been determined to acquire a medieval education. Sadly, I think the modern education system has progressed itself off a cliff in many respects. As a father to a toddler, I now have the opportunity to educate myself, so that I may educate her.

For all these reasons, your channel has been an answer to my prayers. Perhaps we will collaborate in the future - it would be an honour!

- Vale et Salve, frater. 😄

2:29 "Two Concepts of Liberty" was the inaugural lecture delivered by the liberal philosopher Isaiah Berlin before the University of Oxford on 31 October 1958 — but Nietzsche clarified this 80 years previously in genealogy of morals when he talked about master slave morality.

Proverbs 24 3-4
The three paths of the Trivium

3. Knowledge [Grammar]
fills the metaphorical house of the soul with treasures
4. Understanding [Logic]
Holds the house together,
Giving it integrity and
Wisdom [rhetoric]
Builds it
Providing it with its final purpose.

I'm a home schooling parent and would love to run my son through this course. Are there any study materials related to these lectures? Quizzes, essay questions, that kind of thing?

Is there a book or online course to teach basic quadrivium or do you have to go to university?

Thanks for this, it is very interesting field of study and your emphasis on liberating oneself is particularly warming to my heart.
For those interested in a more esoteric understanding:
Grammar was said to be under the influence of the Archangel Michael, who is associated with the Sun. Logic was said to be under the influence of the Archai, or the Spirits of Personality, who are associated with the planet Jupiter. Rhetoric was said to be under the influence of the Elohim, or the Spirits of Form, who are associated with the planet Mars.

Grammar = Input
Logic = process
Rhetoric = Output

Is the correct order

Another way to look at the quadrivium is:

Arithmetic: The Study Of Number
Geometry: The Study Of Space
Music: The Application Of Number In Time
Astronomy The Application Of Geometry In Space & Time

This is why I can't recommend enough practising Euclid's Elements because it covers the first two Arithmetic (the bare bones), and Geometry. Its a daunting book to go through at first but when you pick up on it its really amazing and opens up faculty's of the brain like no other.

Principia Matematica is an initiation into the deeper logic of the material world, consequently it becomes a "Bible" for the materialist mind or one wishing to understand dead matter more completely. To understand life, soul and spirit we have to turn to other thinkers far more profound than those interested in appearances. Gödel comes to mind here specifically with regards to the limitations of mathematics.

Why didn't I learn this in school when I was being educated in what they call "liberal arts"?

Wonderful lecture, many thanks.
Why is subject, person, and writer referred to as "she" rather than "it"?

Excuse me, teacher. What is the name of the book used as reference throughout this series? I heard you say Hauser but not what book. Thank you in advance!

Wrong order.

It's Logic, Grammar, and then Rhetoric. You can't have grammar without logic first.

Interesting. I've mostly seen the conventional order being G L A
