Dang.. it's like when you get mugged and you're forced to cooperate with the mugger by giving them what they want in order to save your life, but when you go report the crime to the police, they immediately slap you with a penalty cause you're breaking the law by cooperated with the criminal.
I mean WTAF!?

So here's what I got from this:
Do not, under any circumstances, report ransomware to any government facility.

There is an issue with the sound on this episode. Those very sharp ssss sounds are actually uncomfortable.
Hope this helps.

As long as we have administrations that think a pen-tester is someone that works at the Bic factory, we will be way behind.

Imagine being robbed and then a policeman ticketing you because the robber has your money.

The company I work for got hit with a ransomware attack back in April. We manufacture medical devices, and all of our automation is tied to a cloud server, which also got taken down. We lost tens of millions, if not hundreds, because of the weeks we were down. Literally had to wipe every computer, all the servers, luckily we had a backup of the actual programs the machines ran. Then the coronavirus hit, which luckily didn't effect us as much, but still did. We just got our emails back the other week from before. Not paying the ransom cost us big time ngl.

I read a story that insurance companies are advising companies to pay the ransom ! It was said that was the best way to get your site back up.

PROACTIVE = costs money now, affects operating expenditures forever
REACTIVE = costs money later, affects capital expenditures temporarily
BONUS : reactive management also allows businesses behaving badly to hide and scapegoat their fraud as “omg! hax!”

The fee could be also to avoid people to transfer money to these countries under the false premise of paying a randsomeware when in fact they want to send money for other reasons.

I am glad for the penalties. These companies need to backup their data and get their security together. It seems like they are more happy to sell our private information and data to criminals than do things that they are supposed to.

"Hey look at these numbers they're we want a piece of that action..."

I understand that paying encourages more ransomware, however; what i think will then happen is that companies will keep the ransomware attacks private to avoid getting more penalized

I literally said the same thing today, " Be proactive, not reactive".

I doubt that most organizations cannot back up their data. Probably they just don't want to.
