There's a famous advertisement put by the Jesuits in Kochi where they were looking for people to translate sanskrit calendars (solar, lunar and lunisolar) to take to Europe.
After then only did they come up with the current calendar world uses today. Before that they were stuck with Julian calendar, which is unscientific, for centuries.
