Tens of thousands of Russian Orthodox worshippers have marked 100-years since the country's last royal family were executed.

Canonised in 2000, the Tsar and his family are now saints, and symbols the Church uses to preach the conservatism and self-reliance it wants Russia to adhere to.

The murders of Tsar Nicholas the Second and his family ended a 300-year old dynasty.

It also heralded the rise of communism in Russia, which would go on to shape the new world order.

Al Jazeera's Rory Challands reports from Moscow.

It was not an execution. It was murder. Long live the long-dead tsar!

It's a myth that the Russian Empire "was a horrible place", though it was obviously not heaven either, it was just "normal".
What was a horrible place was the Soviet Union that formed later- over 20 million dead thanks to its down governments policies. I dont recall a Tsar that got that many innocents killed in such a short time.

Tsar Nicholas II was in one of the toughest spots anyone could have been as a leader, especially a hereditary leader.

Russia had a history of strong tsars, autocrats and nobility, when the world around it was constitutionalizing. Tsar Nicholas II, as many said, did not think he was going to have to become Tsar of All Russians, but fate had different plans, he wanted a happier and simpler life, but he did what was his duty to the best of his ability. From what I can understand, he felt, along with most people, God selected him to lead his people, to improve the nation out of the 19th century and into the 20th, but due to the Russian-Japanese conflict and communists exploiting the defeat, he really was struggling against an uphill battle.

So, in my opinion, Tsar Nicholas II loved his people, he loved Russia and did the best he could in a really bad situation; and it's important to remember, the short republic after his murder did not last long, at all, it fell incredibly quickly to the USSR.

May the last Tsar, his family, along with those soldiers and civilians who defended the legacy of the Russian people, rest in peace.

The Tsar wasn't a bad man, he simply was incompetent to handle all the power he had.

There are still living members of the house of Romanov. The monarchy can be reinstated.

Today we mourn the losses of the last Tsar and his beautiful family. It’s a terrible part of Russian history. A huge mistake that cannot be compensated.
Russians killed part of their national identity when they allowed such massacre.

May the Romanovs rest In Peace.

Holding the monarch accountable was fair,
Blaming the royal consort was expected,
Involving the children was heartless,
The way they were killed was pure evil.

Alexandra Feodrovna was Queen Victoria’s favorite grand daughter. There is a photo of Baby Olga with her great Grandma Queen Victoria, they honestly looked like twins next to each other. If Queen Victoria was alive when Alexandra was murdered I do believe a war could’ve broke out because when Victoria was alive Alexandra was a member of the British Royal family, a close member. But when Victoria’s son became King it kinda changed. She was pushed out of the loop

Bring the Tsar monarchy BACK! But into a semi-constitutional monarchy!

Nicholas never wanted to be Tsar. It takes a narcissistic personality to lead, it wasn't in him. I dont think he had a choice when your country, generals and military turn on you. 😒 Either way this is very disturbing, immoral and sad. God bless their souls 🙏 ❤
