2020 Skoda Rapid Review - Can TSI Replace TDI? | First Drive | Autocar India

In the move from BS4 to BS6, the Skoda Rapid has ditched its old 1.6 MPI petrol and 1.5 TDI diesel engines in favour of a 110hp 1.0 TSI three-cylinder turbo-petrol engine. It also gets a new 6-speed manual gearbox and a torque converter automatic will follow later. There are a few more updates too, but is that enough to breathe new life into this ageing midsize sedan. This same car has been competing with the 3rd generation then 4th generation and now 5th generation Honda City. I really feel bad for the sales guy, they are slamming doors and hoods to convince buyers for a very long time now.

If you're an enthusiast and actually enjoy driving feeling all that excitement as you press the accelerator, then you don't give that much importance to infotainment and mileage or other bells and whistles. As he said the fundamentals are right and thats all matters. Practical car which is fun to drive around.

Finally Skoda Auto and VW is trying to hit the right spot by introducing newer engines which are lesser in CC but generates almost equivalent or more power than the older engines. The main reason to do so must be the fuel efficiency. Launching Market specific products is very necessary if they want to sustain in the market. Their products are rock solid all they need is localisation of parts so that the cost of ownership can be brought down. Also they should try to have more touch points so that it can reach to the masses. In the newer upcoming models which are based AIO-MQB Platform they should try to give more features as the competitors. In my opinion skoda have done a tremendous job by launching Rapid rider at ₹7.49 lakhs (ex -showroom).

Nice look Hormazd. I m a fan of Autocar since its first edition was launched. In 2000 Delhi autoexpo I got chance to meet u at Autocar stall . U haven’t changed much. Keep it up. Coming towards New TSI Rapid it would be nice if skoda would add DSG automatic gearbox and keep its base model on road price under 10.0 lac. I m sure it will beat competition. Trend of automatic cars have already begun.

I have purchased rider model and I got the delivery on 9th june . And I love the car very enthusiastic, great handling, and most importantly rider model is a absolutely value for money. Thanks to skoda for this price.

I was madly waiting for this cars review. I believe there's no point in buying a higher variant. An aftermarket rear view camera touch screen, reverse parking sensors is all I need. Rest I don't care much. Also I'm surprised to see a later launched car is being reviewed first but the cars previously launched such as the facelifted Nexon, new Nissan kicks with that 1.3L beast, etc are still not being reviewed. Let's hope you bring all of that soon.

The question in the title was whether it can replace the TDI. With the fuel consumption figures stated towards the end of the video it is clear that it does even come close. A small family sedan is mostly all about cost/km of ownership. Running costs are a huge part of this cost for cars in this price segment.
