Fund for Excellence for the York Campus

My name is Darryl Jones and I have the pleasure as serving as Vice President of the York Campus of HACC, Central Pennsylvania's Community College. The York Campus Fund for Excellence serves as a catalyst for us to inspire our students to assist them as they move through the college experience. It also provides them with opportunities and hands-on experience so they are competitive in the world of work. Through the York Campus Fund for Excellence, there are three initiatives that we are focused on right now. They include in-class tutoring, emerging leaders in business, and also art appreciation and awareness. With in-class tutoring, that provides a professional tutor is actually in the class with the professor. He or she is working hands-on, one-on-one with students. And we know from research that when students have the academic assistance that they need, the retention rates increase and they are also more successful also. The emerging leaders from business program provides an opportunity for students to become more globally aware of the business economy and also more aware of business in the world of work. Some of the opportunities that they participate in include lessons from leaders seminars, mentoring opportunities, business etiquette seminars and they also have an opportunity for local and regional business trips and also an opportunity to visit several of the embassies in Washington DC. The opportunity that we have at the York Campus includes the art appreciation and awareness. In 2017 the York Campus established the Gallery York. The Gallery York is a 500 square foot venue that provides opportunities for art exhibits, lecture series and also receptions also. On an ongoing basis, the Gallery York provide opportunities for staff to showcase their artwork and also from local artists to show their artwork also. We feel that art was meant to stimulate thought and through thought, students are able to learn various things like listening, opposing ideas, and responding to multiple perspectives also.
