27.5 Schwinn Boundary | 29er to 27.5 conversion | Project Boundary

Many people want a Schwinn Boundary, but being a 29er with a 19" frame the bike is designed for taller riders. What about the rest of us? Is it possible to adapt the bike to be comfortable for riders under 6'?

In this video I put a 27.5 wheelset on the 2020 Schwinn Boundary and take it to the trail to find out.

Do you think this works? What about the look with the smaller wheels? Comment below if you found this interesting.

So surprised when he said he'd said he'd already converted it

Why not go mullet?

Put a 29 back in the front and it’ll slacken the head angle that tiny bit more.

Something to consider is having a 29 inch tire on the front and a 27 inch tire in the back.

You literally just read my mind... thinking about maybe switching my Axum to 27.5.... this was very helpful!

I agree that the 27.5 seems to be a far better option simply due to your height. I too am 5’10” and I have had a hard time maneuvering this beast in tight spots on the basic Florida trails. Our bike shop ended up having to junk the pro-rush derailleurs from both of our bikes, he said they were both trashed and unrepairable as well as doubts the clutch since they have a “b-knuckle “ and a “clutch” and so supposedly they don’t go together. It’s one of the other for a derailleur. We now have néw bottom brackets, new shimano Altus derailleurs and he cut my wife’s handlebars down to 680mm. To replace the “clutch” he put a tension arm/roller” by the bottom bracket to take up chain slap. Just these repairs make the bike feel like a brand new bike. The old pro rush derailleurs were terrible for shifting and for whatever reason pedaling was no where near as smooth as it is now. With all that said, I’m keeping my boundary and we have made a down payment on a Kona fire mountain for my wife. I’m really really looking forward to seeing what else you do to your boundary.

The other day I put my wife's Al Comp rear wheel on my Boundary and I loved it! It lowered the seat height enough for me and I still had the 29er on the front to roll over roots and rocks. But then my wife made me give it back, so . . .

I'd say go mullet with it!!!

I had the same issue being 5'10" on my 2020 Schwinn Boundary. Felt like it was just a touch big standing and a slight reach for the bars. Sliding the seat forward made it rideable. I did purchase the 45mm wake stem to shorten the handle bar reach as well although I have yet to install it. The shorter stem with 27.5" tires could be the ticket for an all around better feel!

Greetings...I like that you are trying a different conversion, and getting a feel for your own body and comfort, when riding. I like the look...the front end looks great. Thanks for posting...in the future this will be something I'm definately looking at. Like you said...almost anything can be converted. Yeah to that!!!

Love your vids and I've actually got me the boundary now, wanted a mongoose but as you know Walmart bike can be cheesy!!! I did a good over look of the boundary so I got Just loaded a vid on it, and I will miss my huffy rock creek dual suspension, had it 11 yrs and got great usage out of

Yes! I love project bikes. Give it a try and see how well it works. Look how well Project X turned out. Anyone can change a pair of handlebars and put new grips on. I want to see how a Walmart bike can be improved.

Gonna be on the lookout for one of those now that I have a 20 minute walk from my parking lot to my work. It’ll be nice to ride a bike in the warm months. Sounds like the size will be good for me being 6’3”

Do whatever makes you happy. I’m 6’5” so the 29” & 19” frame is a welcome change as a big guy. That’s why I got one. Finally.

27.5 and add fenders especially in the front and it will look even better.

You should run it as a mullet. You already have a 29er fork. Just run the 29er wheel up front, it will slacken the bike a hair and the bb height will be between the 29er and 27.5 height. Normally the downsides of a mullet bike is that it can't climb as good but that is usually on bikes with 65-64 degree head angles. This bike is still 69-68 so it's very xc oriented so it can totally be more slack running it as a mullet and still climb good.

I love my Schwinn sidewinder but I saw one of these boundary’s In the store the other day and it made me want to pick it up as a secondary project, as always love your videos kev!

I really like the projects you're doing with this Boundary. Very instructive!

Dude you just gave me some HUGE ideas on my '20 boundary. Keep the bike at a 27.5, my own personal opinion. I've always been a 26er guy, and I always have liked the smaller tires. That's one thing holding me back from riding my boundary a lot, is my tire size. So again, definitely gonna be doing this soon to my bike!

Is that a 120mm fork? If so that may be helping pedal strike a bit. I love my Boundary but the problem is that super high center tube, hoping Schwinn will redesign that lower and get up to speed like most current bikes. P.S. Try the 29 front on Project ALComp for a nice surprise!
