Cheers, bouquets and hugs greeted Olympic gymnast and St. Paul native Suni Lee as she landed back in the Twin Cities, laden with fresh medals (gold in the team event and bronze in the all-around and on bars).

A group of about 50 people — from young gymnasts to U.S. Sen. Amy Klobuchar and St. Paul Mayor Melvin Carter — cheered every time the doors swung open as they waited for Lee, giddy with anticipation.

Their enthusiasm spilled onto other travelers. People gathered in a balcony overlooking the ticketing lines stopped and pulled out their phones, and some travelers stopped to join the welcoming party on their way out of the airport.

The terminal echoed in cheers when Lee walked out, with airport police and TSA agents whooping along with Lee’s fans as phone cameras snapped.
Lee smiled as she moved through the crowd and thanked people for their support.

Now this is how you celebrate and welcome your athletes for appreciation. True athletes that get hurt because they’re competing for their country or Nation are role models.
