Hey guys! In this video I go over the Big One Velociraptor from Jurassic Park! In this episode of Dinosaur Profile we talk about the raptors from the first movie and their alpha. I go over a few of the movie scenes from 1993 and debunk some theories that have been made up about JP over the years. From the script, to the production notes of the film all the way to the finished product itself, today we talk about the evolution of our understanding of the Big One from the original Jurassic Park! Hope you all enjoy! :D

"That doesn't look very scary. More like a six foot turkey."

When that one looks at you...you can see she's figuring things out...

Here’s my thoughts:
While I do think that the Big One was present during Muldoon’s death, I don’t think that it was the one that pounced on him because according to Grant, the raptors hunt by having one act as bait while the others attack from the sides; To me it makes more sense for leader to hang back and let their subordinates do most of the heavy lifting, therefore I think that the raptor that Muldoon aiming to shoot at was the Big One.

I also think that the Big One was present during the kitchen scene due to the one raptor snapped at its partner, as if it were trying to remind them who was in charge.

The Big One is such a clever girl. She's one of the most badass killers

Favourite Raptor/antagonist. I like Blue, but i'd prefer they make Raptors terrifying baddies again.

The Big One is by far my most favorite raptor of the franchise. She's a boss among all raptors, including the Indoraptor. She single handedly killed 6 raptors, while the Indoraptor was struggling with one.
No raptor can stand a chance against her.

I'm pretty sure that the script is off with which one is the Big One, the one killing Muldoon makes a lot more sense in a thematic and storytelling sense, it also being the raptor to scar Rexy is a big thing there.

As for being Male, take note of Muldoon's comment about the raptors, he specifically doesn't say Pack, he directly describes the raptor behavior as a Pride. That variant of raptors having a pride based social structure also explains a lot about the slaughter of other Raptors. Namely that the nest Grant and the kids stumble across wasn't from the big one, but his predecessor as head of the pack.

Basically, the single male for the pride would be killed by the new challenger (the Big One), and the nesting females might have been massacred defending their nests rather than letting the new male wipe out the children of his rival. The two survivors may have been a younger iteration that just hadn't bred yet at that point, and one of the nests slipped past the Big One during the chaos of rounding them up for transfer to the holding pen.

Hell, the messed up social structure and behaviours from the gap filling might have been the same kind of thing that created the mess as well, and the nest guarding behaviors seem strangely a lot like crocodiles. That might also explain the gender thing for that species of raptor as well because unlike Wu's belief, Crocodilians don't gender differentiate from genetics, they do it from the temperature in the egg during incubation...and Wu doesn't bother to double check gender of the dinosaurs at that point if you consider his response to Malcom's "Checking under the dinosaurs skirts" quip. It also works with the movie in the view that no one really understands exactly what caused the situation, the chaos effect bit explaining a lot more.

In the scene when muldoon got ambushed, I believe the one staring at him being mauled while the snake goes by is the big one, same with the raptor that left the scars on the trex

Quite possibly my favorite fictional villain of all time in books and film, right next to Heath Ledger’s Joker. The Big One terrified me as a kid and still fills me with dread as an adult. And it’s really all thanks to two people, Michael Crichton who created the character and Stan Winston who brought it to life on the big screen. Rest In Peace Crichton and Winston.

When you said "the raptor that killed Geoffrey" I couldn't help but imagine the Big One tearing up Joffrey from Game of Thrones, because of ths simalirties in the names. My god, what a satisifying image that is.

In my opinion the big one is the raptor that kills Muldoon and then calls the other raptor into the kitchen after opening the door and then snapping at it the moment it stands taller than her.
This subordinate gets locked in the freezer so the big one follows Grant and co into the control room and again tries to open the door before following them to the visitor centre where it is met by the raptor that killed Arnold from outside. The T Rex kills this raptor before the big one pounces and gives Rexy her famous scars, before being killed herself.

I love the Big One from the first Jurassic Park movie as the main antagonist and she’s terrifying as Sharptooth from the First Land Before Time Movie.

Raptors- the Hyenas of the Mesozoic.

One way or another, male or female this raptor was the only true raptor we've seen since in my eyes. It embodies all that raw primal fear.

As for the big one. I had to stop and think about it, and I'm all colors of confused now.

That... is almost an unanswerable question.

I personally like to think the Big One is the same Raptor that killed Muldoon and jumped on Rexy's back at the end of the movie.

This creature is the reason I obsess over these prehistoric animals. The animosity and intellegence may be pure Hollywood fiction, but we cannot deny they are one reason this fandom and community is so vast.

Big one being the one that killed Muldoon: great because of the relationship between the two.

Big one being the shed captive: great because he/she re enters the situation just in time to almost make the final kill, but ends up being the surprise kill in the twist T Rex entrance.

I like the second one better because it adds such a great element of hero and villain dynamic to the Rex and the Big One.
The raptors were very much the main villain of the third act, and the most notorious of them being Big One. So her death by surprise Rexy appearance really amplifies that feeling of heroism that developed afterwards for the tyrannosaurus in later films.

I wish the raptors were still scary in the movies instead of just pets.

I think The Big One was the raptor staring at Muldoon from afar as one of the others killed him. You’d think she was the one killing him but the way they put attention to the raptor while hearing him scream in the background just put chills all over me and something about it made me feel like that raptor enjoyed watching him die rather than doing the hard work itself. Just like any other thing would do with a hard grudge.
