Just this last week at the SXSW convention Disney Parks chairman Josh D'Amaro blew everyone's minds all over again when he showed off Disney's real retractable lightsaber. What do we know about this light saber? Is it the first time we have seen this? And will this light saber be for sale in Disney parks soon? Come hang out and let's talk about it.
How much would you pay for this fully retractable lightsaber?

How much would you Pay for this Retractable Lightsaber? 💰

The blade is covered in a transparent light diffusing bag of some sort. As it retracts it is essentially smooshed at the bottom. This is why they can’t actually swing it because there’s no structural stability to it, it would just bend over and collapse like a measurement tape with a bag on it. It’s made to look nice, that’s it.

The best thing Disney could sell is the rights to Star Wars.

The blade needs to be a little longer and obviously stronger so that you can swing it. I’m fine if I couldn’t duel but being able to twirl and stuff would be great

Meanwhile Hacksmith is out here making real lightsabers that burn and melt stuff 😂

You can't duel with them right? I know in the lightsaber show Rey puts down the retractable lightsaber and picks up the dueling saber during the show. Awesome video Obi-Dad. Really awesome stuff. Thank you so much for sharing this with us all, have a great day and may the force be with you always.

He's not even holding it in a way where it would constitute a 'swing'. He's holding it like it's covered in eggshells held together with twine and scotch tape. Looks effing slick though. In a few years, I bet they'll have a few different upgraded versions from this.

Its air compressed in to a bag, and a vacuum pump

I strongly doubt this will be able to be strengthened much. Disney R&D is impressive to be sure, but if this blade operates much the way people have suspected for a while then it'll probably be a gee-whiz showpiece level item without any dueling capability, just the extend-retract action. Which, to be clear, is really cool and probably something Disney could sell for a thousand USD a pop, but... well, don't get your hopes up too much.

I highly doubt that these are/will ever be in mass production anytime soon. Disney's "Imagineers" are always doing this "look what we can do!" kinda stuff that isn't meant to be commercially available

A flame isn't a light saber. No matter how cool it looks.
But that retractable one is definitely cool

I'd probably pay up to $500 for Disney's retractable lightsaber. Even if I can't hit it on anything, it is the closest thing we've ever experienced to a "real looking" lightsaber. When I show people my sabers, that'd be the #1 item I go to. Sure I can do cool effects with my proffie/neopixel but the magic isn't there when I have to put a blade in and tighten it down with an allen wrench.

I think it retracts the same way the toys do, just with servos programed to extract and retract. If you look close enough you can see the parts in the "blade" going down, meeting another piece, and both going down. The servos would need room to do the work mechanically. Seems pretty simple...

I think this thing is still delicate as heck so they can’t sell it yet. It seems they finally learned to get it to retract and not just open up, so that’s good.

its probably wouldnt sell that much. In cinematography of lightsabers made by fans in youtube, even in professional work, a Neopixel saber in camera really looks like a real lightsaber, even in the Mandalorian, they use Neo sabers to shoot scenes. this retractable saber has really cool aesthetics indeed, but imagine if its broken, since its a new tech, there will be less than a handful of repairs tutorial and very little people that can fix it. everything that moves up and down makes problem. what happen if dust go in etc

Personally, I'll wait until S3 or SaberForge comes out with their versions. Disney tends to "water down" their saber electronics technology. But this is definitely a major breakthrough in saber technology. I won't deny them that.

"It works with air, it's a kind of balloon that inflates and retracts itself. You can also see that they move very carefully once it's extended. Rey picks up another lightsaber from the ground that is solid, because you can't have a lightsaber duel with a balloon, it wobbles in all directions."

Exactly what someone else said, the hilt is ridiculously large like a thermos and I wouldn't want to carry around a big bulky saber even if it could retract like that. I'm happy with my neopixel ultrasaber which I paid $500 for, it does all the things I want it to do and it looks really cool. So I'm not going to be giving Disney any more money over what I pay for Disney TV. I'm disabled and can't go to the parks anymore as I have a service dog and it would not be fair to put him through that kind of environment, besides I couldn't go on any of the rides. But I remember when I was a little boy around 1967 my grandfather would take me to Disneyland all the time and you hardly had to pay anything to go in the park, all the rides had ticket booths at them if you wanted to ride them then they came out with the ticket books you could buy, but we used to go just to ride the teacups, and have lunch and ice cream.
