How To Do Basic Keyword Research Using The Google Keyword Planner | WP Learning Lab

The cornerstone of search engine optimization (SEO) is solid keyword research. There is plenty of keyword research software available, but they all pull data from the same place: Google. So you might as well go right to the source, the Google keyword planner.

In this tutorial I show you how to do keyword research to help you rank better in Google search.

To use the keyword planner you will have to have a Google Adwords account, but you do not need to give them a credit card number.

Once logged in, enter a keyword or keyword phrase into the search box and click Get Ideas.

Following that click on the Keyword Ideas tab. You will be shown a bunch of information about your specific keyword. You want to make sure that there is a number in the "Avg. Monthly Searches" column.

That number is just an estimate, Google does not give exact search data.

In my opinion, as long as there is search volume there (even 20 searches a month), it's a keyword worth targeting. When I say targeting I mean creating content that is optimized for that keyword.

Below the results for your keyword search, Google may be showing suggestions below. Browsing through those suggestions is a very good idea. I guarantee you'll find keyword ideas there that you didn't think of before.

hi, i liked ur video. when you use all these important keyword phrases in your youtube description, will you use a hashtag in front of every keyword? the same question when u use these phrases as title for youtube, do u put hashtages in front of each phrase in youtube title?

I understand that this video was created/posted 3 years ago. Since then Google's Keyword Planner has changed (visual display) a lot. I'd like to be able to save lists of keywords related to many keyword phrases. Do you know - do I need to create a "campaign" for each particular keyword search and then save those LSIs to that campaign? For example - my keyword phrase is "carrier oils". I'd like to save all the LSIs for that phrase. Then I'd do a keyword search "herbal salves" and save all those LSIs.

Also, it appears there is now a way to modify which columns are displayed in the results of a keyword search. If you're planning on an update of this video could you include how to modify the displayed columns? I tried, however, wasn't sure which ones were best for the purpose of saving Keyword phrases.

Perhaps the above questions are included in the Part 2 video which I'll be watching next.

Hi i'm new to SEO so thanks for this. my question is, when you find the keyword you want to use say 'web page speed test' must i use the word as is in the article? Can i break it up like use 'web page speed' or 'web speed test' and still rank for that keyword?

When doing a keyword search for your competitions websites, is the list that comes up a list of all the keywords that site is using? It seems like quiet a long list. And that could be possible, I'm sure they have deeper pockets than I do being a sole proprietor.

If you are setting up a new account and want to access the Keyword Planner before adding your Billing information, go to g.co/etoaw while signed into the AdWords account. If you access this URL while in the account set up flow it will re-direct you to the Campaign Tab, and give you the "Tools" tab where you can access the KeyWord Planner.

In case anyone reads this and wonders about the credit card registration - All you have to do is click "Skip the guided registration" or whatever. It's a text link. DO NOT HIT CONTINUE. ONLY HIT SKIP THE GUIDED REGISTRATION. After that you can continue as normal.

It will not force you into a credit card signup that way, and you can just use the free tool. :)
