Bees Kill A Hornet With Heat. Hot defensive bee ball

A yellow hornet (Vespa simillima xanthoptera) was caught by our Japanese honey bees during the inspection. They are now swarming it and in a matter of moments, the hornet is completely engulfed. The internal temp hits 46℃ (115°F), killing the hornet within 10 mins as it can't withstand the heat.

Their not stinging the hornet they form like a ball overheating the hornet it's fried😂

It's super cool to think that the same mechanism which keeps queens and larvae from dying in winter also works as a defense strategy against the much less heat-resistant hornets.

So what they're doing, they're crowding the hornet and flapping their wings in place. This creates vibration, and each of those bees are vibrating. Vibrations that are insulated create heat and the heat stacks very quickly, because the vibrations are moving as fast as their wings are and the insulation of the bees plus the vibes plus the heat, it literally cooks the hornets and they die of heat stroke.

For odd reason bees don't really form a ball, if they know yellow hornets are harmless even tough still dangerous, buth ig they know giant hornets are more dangerous so
