Simply beautiful.

I'm a Brit and had a very similar experience with a chap who thought his Army title of Garrison Sergeant Major gave him some authority over a bunch of Royal Marines Commandos who'd just arrived in Camp Bastion after a month at a patrol base.

We were unshaved, filthy, no rank or insignia on display and far too tired for his peacetime bullshit.

We answered each of his questions/orders with "Fuck Off Pongo!"

The memory of it still makes me grin.

I remember in Tall Afar Iraq I had words with the CSM of our entire Squadron. This dude was a freaking legend from the Gulf War. I was grabbing my food and came up to me and said something. I don't remember exactly, but I think it was about my facial hair, or how I was wearing my pants. Not tied up at the bottom, and just draped over my boots. Whatever he said to me, I didn't wanna hear it. I said something back to him and he got mad because I wasn't at Parade Rest. We started to have words. I was respectful but I stood my ground. All of a sudden some other Sergeant walked up and pulled the CSM to the side to say something in his ear. The CSM came back to me and asked me, "Were you on that overnight mission that just got back on base?" I responded with a " Yes Sergeant Major." He immediately told me to grab some food and get some rest. Then he walked off. Shout out to him for understanding the situation.

We had a MSgt who referred to our battery as 'the bastard step children' of the battalion. Let's just say we were a bit unruly and not quite by the book and had some disciplinary problems. During Desert Storm and the push through Kuwait in '91, we out fired and out moved all the other batteries and even performed some infantry work (small fire fights, taking prisoners, ect) and made a night move/attack through two mine fields to outflank an Iraqi position that was still functioning. We received the Navy Unit Commendation ribbon and even praise from the CO (Lt Col Stuart) and were even occasionally approached and congratulated by Marines from the other batteries.

Those types of people (SGMs) have no place in a combat zone. The biggest piece of shit I ever knew was the sergeant major who walked around and checkd to make sure guys were compliant with their uniforms in a combat zone. What a waste.

I had a staff Sargent who jammed everyone for walking around with their hands in their pockets on freezing cold German days. Then one day, we had formation on a very cold day. I was in the front row, and we were released after our row was inspected. I walked around the back of the formation and all the Sargents were in the last row and he had his hands in his pockets and I yelled out his name then, "Get your hands out of your pockets" and the General and other officers looked in time to see him fumble to get his hands out. I kept walking but heard something about being an example to the men. All the soldiers he had jammed were laughing at him and he was bright red. Sure the cold wind had something to do with it but I believe he was extremely embarrassed.

At the Camp Wilson (29 Palms) barber shop I saw a gunny tell a Marine to get back in the chair and get a real haircut after the barber gave this guy the lowest fade possible. Said Marine laughed, grabbed his blouse from the hook, and put it on while saying "This should do just fine, Gunny". He was a Marsoc MSgt. Gunny turned the reddest I have ever seen a human.

This guy was my company first sergeant in boot camp PLT3214 I co in 17’-18’. Super intense so it’s interesting to see him now he’s retired and being so candid and laughing it up.

That reminds me of what a marine did at cherry point. While at the PX a Marines uniform was all sorts of jacked up. A Major stopped him and started reaming him. At the end he asked what unit he was with and the marine replied "Wait you don't realize who I am sir?" the officer said "How the hell am i supposed to know who you are?" The marine dropped everything and sprinted out the door, through the parking lot and out of sight. I just about pissed myself laughing.

I was in Afghanistan on FOB Delaram 2 in 2010, and there was a MSgt and an officer (I don't remember his rank) who would sit at the exit of the chow tent that you had to go through to get to the tables to sit down and eat. If he saw a haircut he didn't like, frog gear, or any other "unauthorized" uniform appearance he would personally stop the Marine/Sailor, have them dump their tray in the garbage, hand them an MRE out of the box he had next to him, and kindly tell them to get out.

That same deployment my buddy saw an Army SOF operator bust up in the tent and almost throw hands with him after cursing him out so badly they went outside. We had a SOF element out of that base who got into a huge firefight and they called for a HIMARS fire mission but it got overridden or something in favor of that same MSgt's QRF going out there and stealing all the glory. In short, the QRF never made it there in time, resulting in one of the operators getting severely injured and scores of their Afghan counterparts being injured or killed.

Saw a major try and stop some guys at the Bagram PX. He asked which guy was in charge, one of em just said the one with the biggest beard.

Did something similar to a major. I was in a classified building and some major wanted to go in without clearance so I told him no and went inside and hung out in the security office for a few minutes while multiple Marines badged in and told him no. He was very not happy but eventually he came back a few months later and told me I did a good job not letting him in. Validation 100

Winter of 2001, Great Lakes. Id just graduated boot camp, and was pulling supplemental base security duty (9/11 had happened a bit prior, remember) while waiting for transfer orders to my A school, which had been delayed. Had a 2400-0600 gate watch, which I did with some Seabee E-5s. They sat in the shack with the guns while I checked IDs.

Around 0400 an RDC chief pulls up for entrance into the base, having forgot his ID, but was due for duty at like 0430 and lived 45 mins away. Orders were orders though, no ID no entry. He starts yelling at me, calling me recruit and asking for my training division number, which ofc I no longer had. Anyways, as this goes on, the Seabees come out, one with the shotgun and the other with a sidearm. The one with the sidearm moseys over, rests his hand on the butt of the pistol and asks real casual like, "Is there a problem, chief?" Chief responds, much more politely, with his eyes on the Seabee's hand, that this RECRUIT is denying him entry. Seabee goes "He's not a recruit, and if you don't have an ID, you can't get in per standing orders from the CO. If you want the number for his office, I can get it for you". Chief gives up, asks me for my name and rank, which I give, tells me he'll remember me, turns around and leaves. The Seabee PO looks at me with a grin after he was out of sight and said "I bet that felt good"

It did, I cant lie. Still warms my heart to this day.

We had a Regimental Sergeant Major who was a colossal dick who decided to challenge two soldiers he deemed to be ‘scruffy’ everyone except him knew and we were cringing even before he stormed over to them. After he said his piece they smiled at him and walked away without a word leaving him red faced not sure what to do next. They were SAS.
It was us that suffered for it but it was worth it 😀.
