FYI - Crashplan backs up your external drives in addition to your computer. I have configured Crashplan to automatically backup my laptop + my attached usb external drive to a dedicated backup drive attached to another computer on my home network. Plus I have both computers and attached drives backed up to the cloud. If you want, you can also have your home computer backed up to another computer outside of your network (i.e. work computer or friend's computer). You only pay for the backup to the cloud.

Great podcast.. it would be helpful to provide a direct link to where you actually start talking about the topic at hand. e.g. at 14:50 we start talking about online backup.

1. Years ago I discovered SyncToy from Microsoft. It's Free! It will let you create a backup for a folder or an entire drive. Instead of copying the entire drive to back up, it will only do new files, changed files and deleted files. This makes it possible to back up an entire 6TB drive in minutes, instead of 2 days. If you use a Drobo to backup your computer, and external drives, SyncToy makes it so easy, I don't understand why anyone would not use it. But it's windows only. Search on "SyncToy".
Note: Make sure when creating your backup set, to select "Echo" to make sure your backup is only in one direction. Also you can deselect the RecycleBin on a drive to avoid taking up space on your backup.
2. There are also YouTube videos on how to rescue data from a dead drive and even a memory card.
3. If you have a Gmail account Google will give you 15GB of free cloud storage.
4. The Drobo 5N now has firmware that will take it up to about 60 Terabytes. We don't have 11TB drives yet, but it's all set to support 5 of them when they are for sale.

I had too many problems with hard drives. For permanent backups now I'm using a "cold" backup solution - 100GB Bluray discs.
I had multiple hard drives failing over the years but non of the Verbatim DVDs burned 10 years ago. They still produce scan results as when they were new.
However, low quality discs may fade even after 2 years. But good quality ones never fail abruptly and that's the main reason I use them.

Stream of consciousness... watching the podcast....
WD 4TB Passport Pro or equal with 3 year warranty is based on 'use' not time sitting idle. Of course, their warranty is based upon time only and not use. Also use this; they stood behind their warranty and replaced. I then switched to Samsung SSD 2TB T3. Expensive, but my files are worth it. This is my primary drive for current/year's files.

Dear Scott. Love your Chanel. Very inspiring. Wonder if you have thought about the placement of your microphones. Erik Kunas beautifull face is almost covered by 40% ;-)) greetings from Denmark

Yup. Print them. If you have five printed photos, you'll look at them all the time. If you have 5, 000 on disk, you never will.

On Amazon Prime can you backup Raw Files?

Backblaze only backs up your currently connected drives. If you're like me and have tons of hard drives it's a horrible solution. I use Amazon.

Your videos are very informative, but "the Grid" background looks like a hackers paradise and little to do with photography. Your previous stage was much more becoming of a "Grid." Just saying.
