I still believe in prenups, but I also think that the approach Mr. Ramsey uses in the clip is also correct. Too many people get into long-term relationships without knowing anything real about their partners. Premarital counseling/therapy with open dialogue followed with a prenup in front of lawyers and recorded and then periodic postnups in the marriage seem like the best method of action so that the relationship starts on solid ground with no secrets and everything in the air and both parties are still protected in the case of divorce.

The in-laws causing issues in a marriage is the piece of sage advice my grandfather gave my parents when they got married. He said "If you want to be happy move as far away from family as you can" they grew up in Illinois, my parents later moved to Alaska. They definitely succeeded in that part. 😆

Money, religion, kids, telatives, all good. Add: substance abuse and mental health disorders.

Wise advice. Good, honest communication is key. If a partner doesn't sit down and talk honestly about themselves, you most definitely won't be happy.

If I were getting married at this point in my life I would do a prenup unless I was marrying someone with assets similar to mine. Sorry - worked way to hard and far too long for someone to come in and in five years decides it’s not working.

In today's world, get the pre-nup.

Is it reasonable to think of prenup as something like insurance? Hope for the best, prepare for the worst?

I agree, prenup when it's a case of disparate net worth or when it's not a first marriage, especially later in life.

The only other way to reduce divorce rates and increase marriage rates is to eliminate the financial incentive to divorce. Otherwise why would you sign a contract that one person benefits financially to break the contract.

LOL I thought the title said “Should I get a penguin?” Which is why I clicked on it.

If you have to ask, the answer is "Yes".

If he won’t tell you how much debt he has what else is he keeping from you? Don’t get married

In many European countries marriage contracts are standard: "separation of goods", i.e. what's mine when I go in remains mine if I come out. You can go for common property, without signing one, but this is considered reckless.

I really like Dave Ramsey & personalities' wisdom . . . And I don't always think that they put enough emphasis on steady marriages as a HUGE part of financial wealth-building. Except for already, really rich folks, divorces kill wealth. Meanwhile, true partnerships (i.e., marriages) are incredibly beneficial to long-term stability . .. social, psychological and financial.

A pre-nup isn’t valid unless both parties reveal their finances. Maybe that’s a good enough reason in this case.

How is marriage on the table before the debt conversation? Insane.

A prenup followed by an amended post nup is best. In fact, periodically amended post nups are better yet.

I just came here for the SIMP view. I wasn't disappointed. Always a different answer for women.
