Autism and sleep can be a huge issue for autistic people trying to have a good sleep routine.

I have found myself in the midst of this A LOT and so I decided to try and figure out a way to make autism and sleep more of a priority.

Sleep was always saw sleep as something that just needed to happen and there was no care attached to it.

Sleep become something that was so valuable for you to operate in daily life effectively. So here are 5 top tips for creating a better sleeping routine that will help you sleep.

1 Pre Relax
Every night make a relaxing routine before bed. My partner had this awesome idea to set a calming, phones down Netflix on routine an hour or so before bed, which allows my brain to turn off and relax.

2 Melatonin
Taking melatonin is an amazing way to help you fall to sleep and stay in a deep sleep all night. I use this mainly when travelling but also used it at home to make sure I sleep well.

3 The Right Mattress
Picking a good bed and mattress to sleep in can make a world of difference to the sleeping experience. It is paramount that you have a safe and comfortable mattress.

4 Reduce White Light
Exposure to white, blue and yellow light keeps your body stimulated and not sleep. So the advice is to reduce and or eliminate those lights from your night routine and opt for no light or red light to help your body feel sleepy.

5 Oxygen
Getting out and exercising is an awesome way to get lots of oxygen in your blood and this can be done by simply going for a daily walk. I have found the days I do exercise are the days I sleep better.

I was diagnosed with Non- Verbal Learning Disorder when I was bout 6 years old. I have always had trouble going to sleep at night. Thanks for helping me to understand why. I still have symptoms of NVLD. And I identify strongly with Asperger’s syndrome. I have a very comfortable bed. I gave up on taking melatonin. But, I do prefer-relaxation by coloring on my phone. I also have a 12 pound weighted blanket that I love. I am uncomfortable without it when I sleep over at a friend’s home. If I can’t sleep, I listen to gentle rain videos or gentle river videos on YouTube. I think Paul from ‘Aspergers from the Inside’ said that Aspie’s are fascinated by water and are naturally drawn to it. I think this is why water videos help me to relax, fall asleep and stay asleep for awhile.

I am trying to help my 4 year old foster son who is autistic. He was placed with us two weeks ago, and he now falls right to sleep no tantrums, but then wakes at between 1:00-3:00 AM and stays awake for 2-4 hours. Some nights he just never even falls back asleep. I will try the tip about red light. Thank you!

I have idiopathic insomnia and I just wanna say that having maybe a single sleeping pill (obviously prescribed by your doctor) like trazidone is absolutely life changing. Hydroxyzine is also a good medication for those who suffer from nightime anxiety and that sort of thing! Also if you're taking melatonin, you should only need about 5-10mg to get drowsy, if you're taking more than that, your melatonin tolerance is too high so it's a good idea to taper off that occasionally to reset the tolerance so it continues to work

Thanks for this! I’m AuDHD, and I’m a deep sleeper, but getting to sleep is hard because if it gets past midnight my all-or-nothing mindset kicks in and basically decides I’ve failed sleep that night so might as well stay awake until tomorrow night. Also I find it SO hard to wake up, I need 3 different alarms and at least 8 hours sleep for me to get up on time for anything. It’s especially stressful because if I get up past 9am, I feel like I’ve wasted the day and I can’t do my morning routine!

I tried the red light for sleep and even though I did wake up I didn’t stay up as long as I normally do. It’s very helpful!!! Thank you!!!

I used melatonin for a while but it seemed to make me feel more depressed during the day :(

Sleep masks are amazing if you don't mind something on your face. Find a decent quality one though, Don't get a cheap one just because it looks cute. Sleep masks are all over Amazon.

funny. awake at 3am watching this, another sleepless night. i am autisitc, adhd, ocd, dyslexia, ptsd, generalized anxiety disorder and depressive disorder. sleep is an elusive animal. none of the tips you mentioned work for me. have tried them all and more. i think the only one that ever worked was physical exhaustion, but that can also flip on you as well, and keep you awake. since nothing helps me sleep i try to enjoy my middle of the night awake time instead of angst-ing over it - which only makes everything worse. good luck fellow insomniacs!

I personally use a baby soother that i can put next to my bed or attach to it because the lights and sounds help me relax and feel safe/ secure so if you struggle with anxiety and autism and even ptsd i recommend a baby soother that has moving lights and soft tunes, they help alot, especially dim lights, or you can use a lava lamp that has glitter in it also works to create this like star show but be careful, another thing is if your a sleeper who needs to be rolled up and stable, those pillows you can wrap around yourself also help which i think you can find them on amazon, also check out compression sheets or weighted blankets

I’ve had this problem for as long as I can remember, where I never sleep straight through the night. I always wake up at regular intervals, even if I’m still able to go straight back to sleep again. Then, when it’s time to get up, it still feels like I haven’t slept enough, even when I’ve had a lie-in. I’ve tried a variety of things: a sleep-mask, having a fan on gently, listening to relaxing music beforehand. It’s not that I don’t feel tired or have trouble falling asleep, it’s just staying asleep is the problem.

I am so glad you brought this up I've always had a horrible time with sleep. My sleep can be super irregular and sometimes even when my mind is off my heart is amped up.

Nice 1 Dan!

For me, melatonin gives vivid dreams so I really don't like it 😞.

Totally agree that a bedtime routine and great mattress and room temperature makes a huge difference.

I couldn't recommend CBD more highly for fellow aspies who feel anxiety, stress or have sleep issues. Getting the dosage right is hard, but really worth persisting with.

I take the CBD oil at approximately 50mg at breakfast and 50mg in early evening. My sleep has improved and feel less stressed with my various aspie triggers.

Happy dreams all 😀
