CAMERA DECISION - LEICA D-Lux 8 vs. RICOH GR IIIx

===

DESPITE the high praise and hype RICOH receives, LEICA D-Lux 8 beats BOTH OF THEM - not bad for a "money grab" "8 year old" ""Panasonic rebrand".
🤣

Since its introduction I have used a Sony RX 100 vi as my travel camera that I could carry in a jacket pocket and have enjoyed using. I recently purchased a D-Lux 8. So far it ticks all of the boxes for what I was looking for in a pocket camera. It’s small, light, easy to use, quick and quiet and the included flash works well. It is not a serious work camera and is not intended as such, but it can do serious photography in the hands of a skilled user( go to the Flickr D-Lux page and see) because it’s never been about which camera you have. We focus too much on gear in my opinion. I have reached a point in my life where I can afford to shoot with Leicas and yes they are expensive but they are in my experience worth every penny. I do not hate other brands. There are fine photos being taken with cell phones. We need to talk more about photos and photography than gear.

The D-Lux 8 has been such a joy. Ive slready sold my GR3 and am in the process of selling most of the rest of my Canon kit. I've realized that simplicity is really what delivers the joy of photography for me

I have used Leicas since I was a teenager(my fathers) and I inherited his cameras as he got new ones, and I bought my very first Leica of my very own, the Leica Q3, last fall. I bought it to take to Europe on a long trip and I just returned from that trip. I had the photographic time of my life with this camera. When I left, the internet was still full of praise for this camera, and while it has been out for over a year now there are still people waiting for theirs. But I have noticed that there is a true hateful energy being spread in comments of some videos about this camera and Leica in general. It doesnt seem to be based on the merits of the machine, just on the price and the number of people who are willing to pay that amount for a camera. Now they seem to be going after the "entry level" Leica, the D-Lux8. This nastiness seems to have little to do with the cameras, and it's all to do with the photographers who dared to spend the money to buy them. They hate that others might make this purchase. I don't get why people concern themselves with the purchases of others. Personally, I value a lens that is this sharp and contrasty and colorful. I value a camera that is hand made in Germany, instead of made mostly by robots in China or Malaysia. I value a camera that is easy and fun to use, and I value a camera that can generate image files of this incredible quality. I went to 4 cities in Italy, and 3 cities in Greece and I only ran into one other Leica Q3 shooter in Athens. We spied each others cameras at lunch in a street side cafe and he, a local, asked me to join him for lunch so we could compare notes. He showed me some great shooting opportunities around the area after lunch and I wound up making some of the best photos of my whole trip. Get over it, haters. Save up some coin and buy a Leica. The first time you use it, you will get hooked.

I’m a lover of the Q2. Went out and bought the D-Lux 8 yesterday. Such a lovely camera; fits right in my (expensive) Bellingham bag. Haters are going to hate, right :)?

My wife and me own a D-Lux 8. And we sold our complete Equipment fuji X100VI, Nikon Zf and Zfc and our Sony RX-100 VII. I don't miss anything. We are so happy with this beauty for the price of a x100vi. The only important thing is the idiot behind the lens. Thanks for your Video and the sound was ok. I understood everything. Regards Dirk and Renate

It’s a social media problem. Many people have become very tribal in their views and will defend whatever the cost sometimes. I was excited by this camera but then started listening to these ‘expert’ views. I don’t now as they can be too critical. I’m interested in the view of someone with a lot of photographic experience rather than equipment fault finding, who can present a more neutral view. Years ago I had four thirds Olympus cameras and managed to get great results from them despite some limitations and earned good money from them. The cameras of today are so much better than those early ones. Thanks for your ‘common sense’!

I agree with all your points. So many people want to criticise cameras that don’t have new sensors or processors when that is irrelevant because the camera is already capable of producing fantastic pictures and it’s menu system is much better than the D-Lux 7.

I have a Q2 and recently put my M11 up for sale because I wasn’t enjoying using it and much preferred taking pictures with the Q2. I thought about using some of the money and replacing it with a D-Lux 8 but decided it was too similar to the Q2. Instead I bought a Fuji XT-50 because it has the option of telephoto lenses and it has IBIS (my hands shake more than they used to!). As a Leica user my opinions may well be dismissed by the haters because I spend my money on Leicas. But it’s my money - I don’t drive, I don’t have kids and I don’t have a mortgage. Photography is my hobby and I’ll spend my disposable income how I want to.

Your comparison to someone overindulging on food he'd never eat anyways sums up today's camera aficionados perfectly. Manufacturers like Sony come from this digital tech world, where they bring this rat race of having to bring out new (supposedly!) better products every year or so. And customers also bring this mindest from areas like smartphones and demand newer, bigger, better everywhere else, too.

Of course I still want evolution in camera manufacturing and innovation. But for most mass produced models a truly big leap 99% of users recognize comes maybe every 4-6 models. Everything in between only comes with better specs and higher numbers on the data sheet, that's it.

Of course you sit in the eye of the storm having launched your channel with the D-Lux 8 ;) I don't see that much hate, but in camera and photography forums the (Leica) haters of course are at it, once again, like they always are. But I have recognized one thing aswell: The hate comes from people who usually could care less if Leica comes out with a M Monochrome for 7.000€. Those people here think Leica is hunting in their territory. Of course Leica always was there, but today's compact camera market exists of such few current models, that the D-Lux 8 simply shines brighter.

And that is the irony in this whole affair: The D-Lux 8 actually is not only the cheapest Leica on the market. I would say no other Leica camera is priced this similarly to their direct competition. 1.600€ for the D-Lux 8, 1.700€ for the X100VI, approx. 1.200€ for the GR III and 1.100€ for Sony's RX100 VII (both of whom are older than the 8 not only when it comes to sensor and processor) speaks volumes IMHO. It's made in China like it's competitors and Leica doesn't even put a premium on it (yet) as one could expect.

At least all this hate won't stop the success of the 8. I had a push-notification on for when it's back in stock on Leica's webshop. Last week it was available again. After less than an hour it was already sold out again. I think this could really be a model like the ones Leica started with: A truly compact everyday carry camera nobody will raise attention with if he uses it in public.

There is way too much snobbery in the photographic world. If it isn't the latest and top of the range it is no good. Added to that we have the influencers who get pad for urging you to buy this camera or that camera. How can you be an ambassador for one company and give an honest review on their products to the public? I totally agree with your point of view. Go your own way and buy and use what suits you.

Fully agree! It's always a question of what you need. For instance I need a carry everyday compact camera with zoom lens for landscapes and portraits with at least 2.8 aperture, thread for filters and a viewfinder are the must, a flash - nice to have. Resolution for max A4 prints. What is there on the market these days for less than 2k usd which meets these requirements and which can be purchased? Fujifilm X-E4 + 18-55 from Sigma - could be but it's much bigger and you just can't buy it anywhere for this money! Sony APS-C a6XXX - just is not my cap of tea even though I really like Sony and Nikon front/rear control rings ... Looks like D-Lux 8 is the best and the only choice which still will be concurrent for the next 5+ years

There are 2 compact cameras that I’ve truly enjoyed using for a number of years. One is the Leica D-Lux 4, another is the Nikon Coolpix A. The latter still takes excellent images despite being some 10 years old.

I just received my D-Lux 8 a few weeks ago, and it reminds me a lot about the good things from D-Lux 4. I love the size, the lens, and the overall controls of the camera. The UI upgrade alone is almost worth the price hike vs D-Lux 7. To some people, myself included, the shooting experience counts for a lot. I like images coming from Fujifilm cameras (have had a few over the years), but the UI can be a little overwhelming at times. So with the UI that Leica is using across their line up now, the user experience is very streamlined and intuitive.

It is your money, spend on whatever camera you think works for you. Haters can hate. All the better so that the camera is actually available to those who want one!

I’m most definitely not a Leica hater as I’ve owned two Leica cameras (so far), the D-Lux 5 which I had to sell when I hit hard times, and an M9 which again was sold but for a different reason. I truly miss the D-Lux 5…
A camera is just a tool that you use to capture images… images I hope, will bring pleasure and emotion to the takers lives (and those who see those images too).
As a tool, I choose them partly for the type work I do, and partly simply for my heart … something that makes me happy and wanting to go out and use.
I wouldn’t crack an egg with a sledgehammer or drive a nail into the wall with a toothpick so I choose the camera, the tool, that I think will do the job, and hope it will give me great pleasure to do that work with too.
Yes, I’ve had a ton of cameras both film and digital; well, much more digital cameras than I’ve had film cameras if truth be told but I don’t think I’ve had a bad camera in all that time.
Leica do truly excellent menus… I wish all other camera manufacturers would do the same as Leica menus are a work of art (if you want a truly dreadful menu then Sony I’d the worst) and they make great cameras too, and so do other manufacturers too!
I have my preferences in camera manufacturers (I shoot with Fujifilm cameras now, the X100VI & the X-T5 and have had their cameras since 2012) that I trust from experience and others I would not touch as I’ve several camera of one particular brand that were not reliable and failed over time.
Do I hate that brand, no, it Iit would take a lot to persuade me to buy one again but I know people who swear by the brand and have never had problems… that’s life.
I can’t understand why there’s so much hatred for something that is simply just a tool, which you have to choose wisely for the purpose you want to use it for… it must be something to do with the anonymity of the web, social media, and chat rooms that brings out the worst in people sadly.
Could I use the D-Lux 8 for what I do, yes… would I buy one, I’ve no idea as I have enough cameras for now but I wouldn’t say no.
I’ve had the Ricoh GRIIIx and while it was nice while I had it, it didn’t suit my work, but would I buy another one… maybe yes.
Now, would I buy the Q3? You bet if I could find the money but I will stick with the poor man’s Leica… the X100VI!
So, I say just enjoy these videos, and stop the hate… the world is already too full of hate as it is 🏴󠁧󠁢󠁳󠁣󠁴󠁿👍
