Demystifying Art:
Oil Paintings
Oil paintings are often more expensive than other forms of art.
A mounted canvas or canvas board is often used, rather than paper, and that and the oil paints themselves can be more expensive than other art materials. The artist also needs to use solvents, if they want to thin their paint and to clean their brushes.
And drying times add to the cost to the artist in terms of time and storage. Often 24 hours is required between layers and it can take 3 to 6 months for an oil painting to fully "cure", or dry through so the paint is solid.
However, I'd query the assumption that oil paints are always more expensive. Today, I saw for sale online a set of 10 x 37ml Windsor & Newton Winton oil paints, for significantly less than the price of one 37ml tube of the Daniel Smith Lapis Lazuli watercolour paint I like to use!
Obviously, the price, or drying time, of materials don't always have much bearing on the talent and skill of the artist, and the main criteria in choosing art is usually which you personally love and want to live with. But I thought you'd like to hear something of the perceived wisdom on different art mediums.

P.S. The oil painting behind me in the video is one my mum painted, and I have it hanging on my bedroom wall, because I remember how happy painting it made her feel. Positive emotional connections figure large in which art I choose to have around me. Xx
