Which artist is your colour inspo? 🌈
In a recent vid I said that understanding the Munsell Colour system is a great way for artists to think about mixing colour. It's not just for painters! Anyone who's ever struggled to match a colour can benefit.
For artists, you don't have to get caught up in the precise codes or numbering system. To me the real power of this system lies in picturing the colour space along 3 dimensions aka the three fundamental qualities of colour: hue, value, and chroma, represented in a Munsell color tree.
❤️💜💙💚💛🧡HUE represents the main colour category eg. red, green, blue, etc. It's visualized in a circle, just like a colour wheel. In the M system, these hues are assigned letter codes eg. Red (R), Yellow-Red (YR), Green (G), Green-Yellow (GY), etc.
🖤🤍VALUE determines how light or dark a colour is. In the M system, value is indicated by a number, eg. 2, 4, 6, and so on. The value scale runs vertically, with the lightest at the top and the darkest at the bottom. So, a 2 is darker than a 6. Identifying and replicating values is crucial, as they contribute up to 80% of a painting's effectiveness and illusion of reality.
🟦🦋🩵🪣👤CHROMA represents the strength or purity of a colour, aka. it’s saturation. The lower the chroma, the closer it tends to neutral gray. In the M system, chroma is represented by a # typically ranging from 2 to 14. The chroma scale runs horizontally, moving from weak on the left to strong on the right - a 2 is weaker than a 6. Many things in nature have lower chroma (intensity) than we think, especially flesh tones.e
