Why the Inside Takeaway is the Best Way to Go - Pros Have Been Doing This For Years!

The moment I changed to an inside takeaway my entire golf game improved. Here's why you should you swing the golf club inside instead of straight back. Common golf instruction tells us to avoid swinging the club inside. Swinging straight back causes a few ball striking issues. It robs your body of power in the swing. It causes your shoulders to stop turning. It forces you to drop the club in the slot. All of these things require considerable timing to play well. Swinging the club inside simplifies the golf swing greatly. For one, it allows your shoulders to turn more, greatly increasing your power. Second, it allows you to swing the club on a shallower plane so you don't have to drop the club in the slot. Third, you can control the face better for straighter shots. It's no secret why professional golfers swing the club inside - it makes the golf swing easier and more powerful.

Tom, I have been following you for about 2 years now, but have to confess that I have been cheating on you for a while now. I got a lot better watching your videos, but thought I needed more so I started watching other people’s video lessons. My game steadily got worse and worse and I couldn’t understand why. My wife finally told me that I needed to just go back to basic Saguto Golf. Well, I did just that and my game is recovering. I should have just stayed with your program and I could have avoided all the frustration. 😢

I like the simplicity! Watching too many videos can really take a toll on my swing. Definitely going to try this today and just focus on taking the club inside and not too much hand manipulation and hip rotation.

I was searching for a swing video validating the inside takeaway and came across yours. I have been trying the straight/out swing for years with inconsistent results, if it worked for irons one day it didn't work for woods and vice versa, I switched to the inside takeaway by accident in my search for a better swing organically, once I practiced the inside takeaway for a few sessions all my irons and woods became more consistent and solved my pull-draw which was caused by the over-the top, which was in turn caused by the straight/outside takeaway. Thank you for validating it, the most important benefit of the inside takeaway is that is makes tuning the hip and shoulders much easier for older golfers!

I have never been so thrilled. My son who hasn't been able to play much due to Uni, has been shanking badly every time we went to course and range. He lost all confidence and got to the point he was fearful of hitting any shot in case he hit somebody. Awful to see your son struggle so much in a game he enjoys a lot. Now I know it's early days, but I got him to watch your weight forward, inside takeaway vlog and we tried it out this morning at range. My word, what a transformation, striping a 4 hybrid 185 yard carry and smiling from ear to ear! Time and time again, you are our go to Tom, you have returned the smile of two of people now!! Great starting point now that he has finished in uni

My new swing doctor is moving me to this and it works. It moves me into a wrist lag too. All of this gives you simple, easy power and I just turned 63! My right knee injury made me think I had to move more straight back "feel" to save my knee. However it did the opposite and caused back issues to. Effortless power is the result of what you are teaching...great job of explaining this to the masses!

Discovered this for myself just this last summer and never looked back once the penny dropped. Had been following the 'straight back' method for a long time before that with hugely inconsistent results. I now see the 'inside takeaway' gathering momentum amongst tour players. Much more solid ball striking from this technique and a lot easier to execute and repeat. 👌

You really take the most logical and comprehensible approach to golf and break it down so easily that it really is a simple "ah-ha" moment every time I watch any of your videos. Thank you!

Tom, your content is excellent and right-on about the takeaway! A friend referred me to watch you and here's my story:

I grew up in the 70s, with the straight back takeaway and was a 3 handicap. However, I was a Range Rat for many years. Took a 15 year, golf layoff and picked up the clubs thinking I'd have something like my old game back with a few months range work. Total frustration for a year-and-a-half followed, working on everything but a more inside takeaway, beause I grew up playing the straight-back and found the slot on my downswing. I had a very slight over-the-top move, that unless my timing was good, I had no idea if I was going to pull or slice, wildly.

I sought out old Bobby Jones instructional videos and he was incredible and the instruction is timeless! His description of the takeaway is exactly as you describe, Tom! The emphasis Jones placed on that inside takeaway as a major key to his "leisurely swing" with power and on line, had me grudgingly try to incorporate it.

Well, it's worked the magic and I finally am seeing the improvement in target consistency skyrocket with added power.

I fought the change to a more inside takeaway (as you described yourself), thinking it would flatten the swing leading to duck-hook everything!

Interesting that Jones, and many great ball strikers of all time have a slightly cupped wrist at the top, but get back on plane, in the slot on the down swing, because of the foundation, inside takeaway with that trail arm connected longer to the body.

Thank you, Tom! You have great content and keep up the great work!

I hit the range today after watching this video yesterday. I'm in New York so it's cold. I was hitting the ball a touch further but the flight from the compression was insane. The ball was hopping off the face in the cold with less effort through my swing. I can't wait to continue working on this!

This makes more sense to me than anything I've ever been taught or tried regarding the takeaway.. My best golf coach didn't care if I did an early set (wrist hinge) or not but wanted the shoulders to turn the arms and club back without a need to worry about shallowing on the downswing. As I hit 70 years of age now, it makes even more sense in regards to my reducing flexibility and strength. I haven't hit a 250 + yard drive in several years until I worked on this and it immediately led to my first birdie putt of the day.. Now I just have to drill it in as a habit without thinking about it. Thank you!

I am just getting back into golf after a hiatus of about 10 years. I wasn’t very good even at my best then. Now, after about a week I am striking the ball much better and hitting it straighter and longer than ever before. I am following your advice and it’s working. Of course after only a week I still hit bad shots but I am getting more consistent.

A guy on the range must have seen one of my bad one’s and came over to share his advice. His advice you got to get your club much higher. Don’t take it around your body. Lift it higher.

I laughed inside and thanked him so he’d go away and continue to practice based on your instruction.

The reason why (in my opinion) many golfers take the club straight back is that's what they were taught and then simply don't question what they were taught because they don't know any different. I think things are changing though in the golf instruction world as a whole that taking the club back on plane (or inside) is the way to go. There are some holdouts for the old method, but I think they will be fewer with each passing year.
I have a similar story to yours Tom. My dad taught me "lift and shift" and it produced very short shots and a massive banana slice. When I came back to golf after a twenty-year break during the pandemic, I stumbled across your channel in my YouTube feed. The rest, as they say, is history. I went from a 30 handicap to a 15 handicap in two seasons of outdoor play. The first time in my life I hit a drive OVER 300 yards, usually 250 plus with fifty percent of fairways hit in a round.
When I'm on the public courses with random strangers I get paired up with if they comment on my game, I very briefly mention my amazing swing coach Tom Saguto and his YouTube channel and online golf school. Or I might say "I'm just stacking and tilting." And then they say, "what's that?" Good times 😁

Great stuff here, and there really is this authentic anecdote to your approach to the game and teaching that is appealing- Just earlier this year, I was really struggling with this same flawed idea of having to take the club straight back/on the outside. Great to see this. I’ll just leave it at this- In my experience good, solid, sound instruction is hard to come by. What may work for someone may not for someone else and it’s just good to keep an open mind. From a fellow PGA Pro, this was refreshing. So thank you. 👍🏼⛳️

I've been off for two years. I told my nephews they need to watch this and teach me to help play better. (trust me, this helps all involved) LOL Saggy, you motivate me to play better with simplicity!! The 10" between my ears is killing me!! ) yes I have a fat head!

I was taught straight back and up and then shallowed the club and it worked...2 hip operations and less ability to rotate has made me question this method and I have started the takeaway "inside" naturally to see if it makes a difference so early days. Jackie Burke, like you, says the swing is a circle which means you should go back on the inside. It feels better and connected. Enjoying your videos and explanations.

Once again, you have hit it out of the park.Lead arm on the shoulder line (9:20) says it all.To me that has always led to far better compression at contact. Hogan was a master of that position. It helps to keep the right elbow connected which I think was his real "secret". Keep up the great work.Your swing looks so much better than it has ever been.

Tom, I have the upright swing you speak about. The problem with this swing is, I have two many swing thoughts, and the sequencing has to be perfect or I'm dealing with a slice or a pull. I do use my hips to create power.

After watching this vid. I used my shoulders to create power and I performed the swing as you demonstrated including the correct use of the right leg.
Results: One swing thought, consistency, more distance, and the ball goes straight. With consistency comes confidence, and with confidence comes low scores.

I'm practicing at a golf simulator now but will be using this swing next spring. I find it remarkably simple and consistant. As well, absolutely no pressure on my back. I'm 66 years old from Canada. My seven iron, using this swing is averaging 155 yds. on the simulator. Thanks.
