How To Connect Joystick Cables to Valve Spools - Covered / Bonnet Style

This video shows how to remove a joystick control cable from a loader control valve spool, as well as how to reattach the new cable, using the same connector pieces. There are two main styles of how joystick cables connect to tractor loader control valve spools - one has the cable and spool connection out in the open, and the cable sheath is anchored further up the cable. The other style, shown in this video, is the covered, or bonnet style. With this style, the cable cover is bolted to the valve body with a collar, and it covers up the cable tip where it is connected to the valve spool.

To remove your old cable, first remove the allen screws that are bolting the joystick cable collar to the valve body. Then, thread the joystick sheath cover up the cable, until it is completely unthreaded. Slide this aluminum cover up the cable so it is out of the way. You can see the thimble piece where the cable tip is connected to the valve spool. If you wiggle it, you notice that it’s still firmly attached. The pin holding the thimble piece to the valve spool needs to be pushed out. Then you can pull the cable off the spool. Unthread the thimble piece from the cable tip. Slide the cable cover down to the threads and unthread it until it comes off the end of the cable sheath.

To attach your new joystick cable to the loader control valve spool, the first step is to thread the bolt up the threads and onto the cable sheath. Slide it back a bit so it is out of the way. Then slide the oval collar onto the bonnet piece, ensuring the o-ring is snug between the two pieces. Then thread the cover piece up onto the cable, threading it back far enough that the internal cable tip is exposed. Thread the thimble piece onto the cable tip, using Loctite to secure it. Place the thimble piece over the valve spool tip, and slide the pin into the hole. This anchors the joystick lever internal cable tip to the spool tip. Now thread the bonnet cover piece down the cable sheath threads, until it bottoms out against the face of the valve. Thread the bolt, up against the bonnet cover to hold it in place. Bolt the collar to the valve body using the 2 allen screws.

I have a Mahindra 2638 with a Besko hydraulic loader valve. I broke one of the linkage covers and could not find a placement ANYWHERE. Mahindra could only sell the entire Joystick (over$700).

After calling 5 other parts distributors (including 2 Mahindra dealers), Sharla at Short Line Parts took the time to actually try and help me. Together we figure out that the Koyker Cable connector kit PN# is K669298 might be a suitable substitute.

She sent me one to try and low and behold, the cable cover (bonnet) fit. It wasn't an exact replacement but close enough. Several of the other parts in the kit were an exact replacement.

Thanks to Sharla and the Koyker kit, I save a bunch of money and 3 weeks (wait time for Mahindra part).

What types of spool valves are these? My two valves don't have the threaded holes to bolt the bonnet to.
