I wanted to do something like that, but the cost of flanged Wheels was prohibitive. I'm sure there's an economical alternative, but haven't found it quite yet

Nice design Lyn.  I have 3 of them myself.  (See my videos)   I would invite you to go on a ride together, but I think your in New Zealand, and I am in the US.
