Hoover Senior Fellow, Elizabeth Economy, lays out Xi Jinping's vision aimed at reordering the world order with China at its center. Through programs like the Belt and Road Initiative, China strategically exports its own development models and expands its geopolitical dominance while presenting these changes as natural and beneficial to the international community. But Xi’s vision, supported by a comprehensive strategy to reshape the international order through territorial expansion, regional influence, and economic dominance, poses a threat to western values, institutions, and alliances.

Elizabeth Economy is the Hargrove Senior Fellow and co-chair of the Program on the US, China, and the World at the Hoover Institution.

Very good presentation. I went to China in 1981 on a merchant ship as a cadet engineer and the last time in 2020 as a airfreight 747 captain. I saw a lot of change. I realized by 1998 that our enormous trade imbalance was financing their military growth and potentially the US being pushed out of western Pacific. The demographic and financial headwinds in PRC are significant but the lack of belief in the western democratic system by Gen Zand Millenials is a huge problem. Gap between Left and conservatives in US is an enormous problem. I wonder if US can renew itself and rise again.

The countering between USA and China is unfolding in a various directions but as a rule the core of opposition always lie on the level of ideology. The competition in 20 century between socialism and capitalism was mainly economy, military and technology, but now it will be political namely: between idea of national sovereignty and political independency on the one hand and social equality and ethnical and cultural autonomy on the other hand.
