It led to hundreds of innocent women being executed for imaginary crimes, and in the case of Geillis Duncan, the personal involvement of James VI, King of Scots. In reality, witches were innocent, terrified, tortured, falsely accused people who were stereotyped by others in their society. A reminder which is valid even now of the dangers of jumping to conclusions about people who are perceived to be different in some way.

I lived in Edinburgh and visited Holyrood Castle a few times without knowing the history. Now I realised that I'm a witch, have been a witch all my life without knowing I was one, and watching this. Thank you for letting me know the history behind the castle. I stayed at Pollock Halls as a student behind Arthur's Seat.

Watching this from Brisbane, spent November 2022 in Edinburgh, most afternoons I would venture out and follow the storylines of Edinburgh’s rich and regrettably torturous herstory of witches from the Well on Castle Hill to Ramsay Lane, The Mound, Grassmarket, Cows Gate to name a few. Both my 9th Great Grandfather Ian Guillieland and his sister Voilat were put on trial and convicted in 1658. They and their families were imprisoned 3 times escaping each time and finally escaped for good with the help of the coven. They were both leaders .. the coven decided to remain and meet their fate whilst assisting ian and voilat´s escape in order to save the knowledge. Voilat escaped to Londonderry and my gg grandfather Ian escaped to the colonies. The fear at the time was so intense that they changed the spelling of our last name to protect their descendants. All of this was published by the university of Edinburgh in 2020. I am honored to be descended from them 🖤
