I was a volunteer for a wildlife rescue. We often had owls and other raptors come in with injuries. One was a mature Golden Eagle that had an infected skunk bite on its leg which required daily washing and debridement. We covered his head to keep him quiet during the process while one person wearing a heavy leather glove allowed the eagle to clench her fist with its talons. The skin and scales were thick and heavy and the muscles in the toes were incredibly strong. The talons were 3"+ long. The legs were covered all the way down with beautiful tiny feathers. One of the most amazing visual experiences of my life. We had regular picnics, etc., at each one we celebrated with a release to the wild of a successful rehab. He was one.

I was minding my own business riding down the road on a cherry red motorcycle, with my cherry red helmet, when a new driver with a two weeks old license T-boned me. She kept yelling "I saw the grey Cadillac!" which was well into 5 car lengths behind me. I went down on my full face helmet. When, the cop came to take the police report at the hospital, he commented I was in better shape than she was as she was hysterical and I'd probably saved someone's life, despite my shoulder to elbow road rash and a tiny pea sized spot on my left thumb. I ended up having to have my left thumb rebuilt. When the nurse returned my helmet she said if I hadn't been wearing it, I'd probably have had to have my jaw rebuilt, not just my thumb. Only a fool with a death wish rides without a helmet.
