What Makes This Bike Great? Ep7: Ducati Monster 900

Without the humble 1993 Monster 900, Ducati may not have been the company it is today. With the help of owner Paul Lang we take a trip down memory lane to see what makes Miguel Galluzzi's Frankenstein creation tick and how it came to be. We also take it for a spin to see how it's stood the test of time.

This Paul Lang guy should make a youtube channel right now! So much fun to listen, so much energy and enthusiasm in the way he talks. I could be listening to him talk about bikes for hours

Light, simple, torquey and good looking. Simple recipe that’s hard to get wrong

You've perfectly explained why I still have my almost entirely analog monster 696 (non-abs in my 5 bike garage). It's a full analog beast and I have down to around 300lbs wet. Nothing like it.

My first street bike was a 2006 Monster S2R800. 5 other bikes later and it's still in my garage, I'll never get rid of it. I converted the brake light and blinkers to LEDs, custom fit a HID in the stock headlight bucket, retrofitted 998 forks to sharpen up the handling, and swapped the levers for adjustable radial Brembo ones... I've probably spent as much on parts as it's worth, just because I love how it feels to ride and I basically wanted exactly *it* with some high end components.

Absolutely brilliant. Neevsey and Langy together. We've all read how enthusiastic Paul is about his Monster (yes been reading Bike forever).
This vid demonstrates this in spades. Definitely made me smile all the way through. And the original Monster is a lovely thing. Thank you fellas. Do more stuff like this.

I'm 10 years younger, and that's why to me the Hypermotard 1100 with it's big booming thumping air-cooled V-Twin is peak Ducati to me. I'm keeping mine for life.

"It's an LP" is such a good description.

Really enjoyed that. A simple nice rideable motorbike giving so much pleasure in ownership and riding. Imagine touring around the Dolomites on an original 900 Monster. That would be a most memorable tour indeed.

In US money, $7, 500 in 1993 is $16, 488 today. I remember when this came out too. I don't know what Ducati's thinking now, getting rid of the trellis frame on a Monster should be a sin. I rode a 2016 Monster 1200. Definitely a beast. It was pretty snatchy, and wanted to stall trying to get it rolling, but that was probably Euro fueling or a cold engine or something. After 4, 500rpm it was a slingshot.

This is how I felt about my multistrada 1100s. Just loved riding it.
I did sell it and I've not enjoyed a bike since.

I had a 2001 Yellow 900ie. Other than fuel injection and a tachometer, looked identical... Loved that bike!

Got out of motorcycles in 1992 after we had our first child. Saw my first monster parked outside our favorite restaurant and I had to check it out. 2017 when all the kids where out of the house and I was looking for my first motorcycle after all those years, I had to have a monster. That look is so intoxicating, even sitting in the garage, I just stare at it. Thanks for the great video and please do more with Paul.

I remember asking you a few months ago about your thoughts on the 1st gen monster since it represents a level of simplicity thats missing nowadays while hitting the sweet spot new bikes are chasing. Glad to see a video on it!

Fully subscribe to Mr. Lang’s enthusiasm about this very early Monster. Of course I do as I have an exact same fully original red ‘93 M900 since 1996. Brilliant bike! Unparalleled looks and a sound to die for. Never bettered.

When I saw this bike on a bike magazine cover in 1993, I wanted one. A few years later I bought a Monster for my first bike.

The prettiest Duc Monster, ever, in my opinion.
The last of the 4-valve models in the 2000s, the S4RS, is a very close second. But that 1st gen 2-valve is just like they say, "nothing beats the original".
It's also super fun and an emotional ride, very visceral, a lot more than the specs sheet would make you believe. Still miss mine after 20 years.
Congrats to the owner, beautifull example of the original M900, and an outstandingly good example of a 30+ year old motorcycle.

the bike I regret not getting the most. I had just got 750SS and I swear the Monster came out about the next day. The shop let me ride one of the first they got and man!!!! I was so bummed that I had not just waited a little bit. This was a nice video, thanks for sharing this beautiful bike.
